General flight issue/rebooking question

Hello everybody,

I seem to be posting only during travel hiccups, but I was hoping somebody might have some insight here.

I am currently in the world’s longest security line at Cologne-Bonn airport. I don’t know why I had to leave the secure area upon arrival (I started in Nice) but I did. The line IS moving, but it’s so long I don’t know if I’ll make it (the flight is thankfully delayed,). I have an hour. So here’s my question:

I know Eurowings is responsible for getting me to my destination, but it does not have another flight to Rijeka until Thursday or Friday. Does anybody know what impact, if any, that has on their obligations? I’ve heard of having to wait a day, but three is a lot. Another potential issue is that my bag (I imagine) will be on the plane.

The irony is that I didn’t especially want to go to Rijeka. It was the most straightforward ticket to the general area in was headed. Sigh.
Any insight would be much appreciated!

What is the "general area" you are headed? Could they get you to Zadar, Pula, Zagreb, and would that help?
Don't give up hope just yet, I've been in some terrible lines and thought all hope was lost, then made it onto the flight. While in line, I would be trying to call or message with someone from the airline.

It looks like there are no flights anywhere in Croatia for the rest of the day. But that is just Eurowings, i dont know if their connection with Lufthansa becomes relevant in a situation like this.

The general direction is just that I have to be in Trieste by Saturday and was planning 2 days in Rijeka-opatija and then, likely, heading for Trieste. If it weren’t for my bag heading to Rijeka (I hope—that’s another story, but I did see them tag it “Rijeka” in Nice), I’d be content to land somewhere in the general vicinity.

I don’t have any good advice but I hope you make your flight and that you’ll keep us posted. I would hope that if Eurowings can book you on another airline if they don’t have any good options. It was so great meeting you on the tour!

Another possibility is Venice — it’s just a short train ride from Trieste.

Hello again (and extra hi to Megan!),

I made it, but just barely. There was then a further hold up because the agent at passport control couldn’t find my stamp from CDG. Of course, now it looks like we’re a bit more delayed so they can locate the bags of no-shows (hopefully that doesn’t include mine!)

No clue what was going on at the airport, but I’ve never seen lines like that, and I’ve traveled at Newark, JFK, and Heathrow during the holidays. It looked like they were very understaffed and also trying new social distancing and security protocols. I’m a bit surprised they didn’t have agents wandering the line pulling out the people who were in danger of missing their flights, as that seems pretty standard. Oh well. One more flight and then meeting my transfer to Rijeka center. Guess booking that extra “no worries” packet with GoOpti was the right call after all.

Thanks for all all the friendly messsges!

So glad you made your flight!
Good fortune is with you because it looks like your flight was one of a very few whose departure was delayed out of CGN. It was delayed by one hour and twenty minutes, according to the flight tracking website Airportia.
Now that you’re in Croatia, have a great trip!

Now that people are traveling again, it seems there is a significant shortage of trained staff at the airports to accommodate the number of travelers. I hope this is a very temporary situation that can correct itself quickly. Hopefully, there is evidence of new employees being trained as we speak.

My biggest line to-date was in the U.S. Virgin Islands flying back to the U.S. The worst part is we had to wait in a long line getting off a ferry from the British Virgin Islands, taxi to the airport, then wait in an even longer line at the airport. Two passport lines in one day was a tough pill to swallow.
