Try doing a google search for lodging in Frankfurt, get some names of places that look interesting then look on tripadvisor.com for reviews. Peruse this forum and note others experiences and do more research. That's what I do.

P.S. You might be better off if you look at the To The West forum below for information related to Germany.

When in the Frankfurt area, I always stay in Mainz at the Hotel Königshof. It's convenient (across the Bahnhofsplatz from the train station) and economical.

Oh there are tons of hotels in Frankfurt where you can stay for less than $100 per night, UNLESS you will be here during a major trade fair. I use www.hrs.com to find hotels. This way you can check not only the price, but the availability, the location, and the amenities. I often advise going to the Hotel Monopol or the Ibis Hotel on the Friedensbruche as this is right on the river with a park in front of it. If you want to stay in a quaint neighborhood though, look at the Bornheim Hof on the Bergerstrasse. Best neighborhood in town!
