Is anyone crazy enough to save their gelato spoons, just to know how rediculously much gelato you ate in 2 weeks? (Post Scripts- I do, of course I really think that I am going to make some creative memory out of them someday) Please share your favorite gelato shop and perhaps any unusual flavor you have tried.
I didn't save my spoons but arent' the little cups great! My favorite gelato spot is not in Italy but in France. (I have travled a lot of but not all of Italy) I was living in Antibes, France and was lucky to live ab above an gelato shop (don't remember the name but next to the English book store near the international cay) their Mint/w/Bits of Chocolate was to die for. I have yet to make (I'm a pastry chef) or taste ice cream or gelato that equals it.
Oh now I am hungry!
Susan,
I save almost everything: tickets, receipts, hotel bills, train schedules, you name it. I place these things in ZipLoc bags - one for each locale with place name and dates of visit written on the bags. Later at home, these become some of the most valued memorabilia in our scrapbook / photo album / trip diary ... all that remains of memories [or gelato], after all.
I reserve one ZipLoc bag to keep those receipts needed for US Customs - or maybe VAT tax refunds.

I certainly could do this. After discovering the Dolce Vita gelato shop in Cortona, and their wonderful fruit flavors, particularly the melon - (canteloupe)and hazelnut, as well as many chocolate varities -- I could have easily eaten their exclusively, and almost did!
Can't remember the name of the place, but it was on the walk from the Pantheon to the Trevi Fountain in Rome. Not a storefront, but a pretty big and classy establishment with guys in bowties and hats serving it up (and I DID save the little spoons).
I saved the spoons and also have an entire section devoted to gelato in my photo album from a 20 day tour of Italy. I made it my pesonal goal to try as many flavors as possible (30, some of them twice). My favorite flavor was limoncello, with fior di latte a close second. I also tried rice, pine nut, and saffron (in San Gimignano, their specialty). The best spot was La Botique del Gelato in Venice. Side note: Since you can put 2 or 3 flavors in a cup you can taste many without high calorie intake. I took many photos of the gelato displays because they were gorgeous works of art! I also took a great shot of some nuns standing in line for gelato in Rome.
Just got back from Italy... We had Gelato almost every day. I think the best we had was near the Spanish Steps... I don't recall the name of the place, sorry. My favorite flavor was Lemon. yum yum.
