gel insoles

Does anyone know if I can buy Dr. Scholl gel insoles at SFO at any of the shops after going thru security? Or is there a drugstore in Paris that sells a comparable product? Thought we were good to go with just carry-on luggage until I found out we can't be jellin'...

Dr Scholls insoles may be called gel, but they aren't gel like the kind that is banned for carryon. They are made of a squishy rubber, but they don't leak if punctured. The kind of gel that you must have in your 1 qt baggie is like hair gel or gel-type sunscreen. You won't be stopped for your insoles. A sign at our local airport says if you can pour it out (liquid), spray it out (aerosol) or sqeeze it out (gel) it must go in the baggie. Gel insoles aren't in any of those categories.

According to the TSA web site, "Gel shoe inserts are not permitted" except in your checked baggage.

You could also send them to your first hotel location if you really need to - or find an alternate non-jell product.

You can go to the dr schole web site too and see if they sell internationally... then just take the wraper with you when you get to paris and find a dept shoe store or pharmcie and show them (or even print the french page from their web.

Here is the latest word from TSA on Dr. Scholl's gel insoles. Extremely vague, to say the least!

Thank you for your e-mail.

The Transportation Security Administration's current security screening procedures require all carry-on luggage and accessible property be screened before passengers take them onboard an aircraft. Regardless of whether an item is on the prohibited or permitted items list, the Transportation Security Officers (TSO's) have discretion to prohibit an individual from carrying an item through the screening checkpoint or onboard an aircraft if the item poses a security threat.

Therefore, TSA security screening personnel make the final decision on whether to permit items like Dr. Scholl's massaging gel insoles into the sterile area of the airport. Should you need additional assistance, feel free to contact us at toll free 866-289-9673.

It almost sounds like if TSA deems your insoles too old and smelly, you can't bring them!:-D

There was a recent post on the Grafitti Wall regarding gel insoles. Someone had them confiscated!
I've not had any problems with them yet but maybe I should consider other options just incase...If I had to take out my insoles last minute my shoes would feel sloppy on my feet! No fun!

This is common. Never assume that ANY item is "permitted". You are at the mercy of the whim of the TSA screener.Hope that he is having a good day. You have no reasonable expectation that an item will not be challenged or seized
