Will I be able to get service in Italy with the galaxy tablet?

If it is wifi capable, it will work in wifi areas. You may find free areas, or you may have to pay for it.

...and even the free WiFi will be a secure hotspot requiring a password, I do not recall seeing a single open WiFi signal. If you are talking wireless telephone service, the expense may be greater than the worth.
