The actress Lorraine Bracco has a New TV show called “My Big Italian Adventure”. It airs tomorrow night on HGTV at 9. The premise is that she purchased an old house for €1 in Sambuca di Scilia and it is basically just 4 walls and a roof. She was interviewed this morning and said she had 3 years to complete the work and it cost about €250,000. This included shipping furniture she had from the States. I’m gonna take a look. This is just an FYI post.
Could be interesting as some of us have been tempted by those 1E house sales. Nice to see the realistic costing....more than my retirement budget or house value....but fun to dream.
And she's likely being funded by the TV show, so its not really out of her pocket.
I have the show set to record. I think it will be entertaining to watch the progress. May not be entirely realistic I’m sure, but still something new and hopefully will show some shots of the area.
Yeah Stan,I figured that too, but if anyone even had an inkling of doing something similar it at least gives you an idea of the costs.
Ncangelose, I agree. She said she last visited in November 2019 so it is Current.
Thanks Barbara for sharing the info. We will tune in tomorrow. This piqued our interest since we were going to be in the area last month. We could have taken a bus from Trapani to visit the town. We are not interested in living there, but it would have been fun to see this “ghost town.”
Interesting story:

Thanks Barbara for the heads up. We will dvr it!
hey hey barbara
thanks for the info, have it recorded.
couple years ago, another HGTV show "The Full Montepulciano" was about toby and david from ohio yearning to buy property for a B&B and live in italy. bought a 1/4 done run down house with gorgeous views, minutes from here.
construction took couple years after lots of blood, sweat, and tears with paperwork and great italian friends got it done.
they are so so proud of their guest house & estate "fonte martino". i follow them and their blog at fontemartino.com take a look if interested
aloha
Will check them out, thanks
Thanks! I have set the program to record. I always enjoy seeing European countries on TV or in movies, especially now.
Saw the program last night. The end results were spectacular but a little overdone for the area. There are a lot of you tube videos about the 1 euro structures in Sicily. An interesting way to spend a few hours. As you could imagine, they really aren’t 1 euro. It’s like watching tiny home shows. All these alternative programs are better than our major tv station programming. Find subjects that interest you.
Thanks for the heads up!
We had fun watching - not only because of her "adventure" and our postponed visit to the area. Also - I can relate to doing a renovation - all be it - no where near the disaster she has started with. Amazing what great contacts and multi-euros can do.
Still a bit confused at the layout and how they are actually keeping the walls from falling in/over. Glad we aren't living in a +200 year old home.
Just watching the first episode now.
Yikes, is she ever annoying. Not sure I'll watch it all. All that yelping and weird laughing.
Her yelping and laughing was annoying. Ya just have to try to ignore it. Fast forward to the end to see the finished renovation.
We watched it last night and my husband about midway through asked if it was a series. I told him it was and wanted to know why he was asking. He couldn’t stand her. I was annoyed, but will try to overlook that. She’s very dramatic, but not surprising since she’s an actress.
I have to admit I did not Watch it yet. Luckily we were actually busy this weekend. Will try and get to it tonight.
We enjoyed the show, but like others mentioned we “tolerated” Lorraine Bracco’s behavior. We never watched her on the “Sopranos” series. Just out of curiosity I checked a clip on YouTube. She played a Psychiatrist! What a difference of character. Just sayin’.
Finally watched the show. She wasn’t too annoying for me, but hubby disagrees. I hope they show more of the town in the next episode. Since it only has 3 episodes I will finished it out. I also have to get to Watch Rick’s New shows. Hubby us catching up on Star Trek and Mandolorian so it might take a week or two.
I couldn’t stand Lorraine Bracco - wow - beyond obnoxious. Had to fast forward to see the end result... not my cup of tea but i did like the tile floors.
Thanks for the heads up on this show. I watched it and enjoyed the scenery. She was almost too annoying to finish watching this first episode with all the excessive yelping! Hopefully that will tone down for the rest of the episodes, because I really want to watch the rest.
I suspect she's not the only actor who's success is due to a good script and good director. 😁
Glad we were not the only ones that were surprised by how different she was from the characters she played.
Thanks for letting us know about this. Have always loved her in shows. Yes, my husband agreed that she was really annoying on this one but the scenery of Italy made it worthwhile. I might have given up halfway through and just started googling “can I get a visa to live in Italy and a €1 house... sigh.
I saw the show, and now reading this and your comments, I completely agree. I decided to mute it and fast forward through bits of it to avoid her. Interesting to see the final restoration, but I really wondered how much she would ever stay there. And since the 1E offers are to try to revitalize the town’s population, I found it somewhat sad that she was given priority.
I just found “Dream of Italy” last night on Prime Video - really enjoying them!
One example: Season 1, Episode 4, Naples/Amalfi was so fun to see, especially because they also showed adult students in specific training for making authentic pizza. Entertaining comments, such as “Don’t hold it like a chicken neck. We aren’t killing chickens, here.”
If you were halfway on board but a little put off by the first episode, hang in there for the second episode. I felt like it got better (less shrieking, more Italy). Of course I can put up with a lot for real estate eye candy...
The recent episode of House Hunters International set in Apricale was also dreamy.
Enjoyed the second episode. Looking forward to 3rd episode 11/13.
I too found her annoying but love the scenery & watching the process. I rolled my eyes every time she said it wasn't in her budget.
