FYI Captain Train HAS become Trainline

Hi Travelers,

While doing some research I came across this information...

Here is an excerpt from the CaptainTrain Blog:

Since the takeover by Trainline, the Captain Train managers have been leading a double life and juggling two business cards at a time: some with the Captain Train logo, others with the Trainline logo. To lighten their pockets, as well as establish one single brand across Europe, we’ve decided to adopt the name Trainline. From September on, Captain Train will be known as Trainline. Our site and our application will change name and colour, but soon you will see that Captain Train is just getting a mint green paint job. We have no plans to move a single pixel, it’s just a simple coat of paint, so that the appearance of Trainline services are the same on both sides of the Channel.

You may read about this huge business transaction here.

Here's what the man in seat 61
has to say about this change:

Captaintrain.com is to be rebranded as Trainline in September, after Trainline bought them a few months ago. It is to be hoped that they don't start adding fees...

Personally, I've not used the captaintrain website to book tickets but I've read that many here on this forum have.

I prefer to use each country's railway such a Trenitalia for Italy, Renfe for Spain & SNCF for France, etc, etc...

So... we'll see how it goes...

Happy & Safe travels to you all!

Priscilla

Priscilla,

Thanks for posting this. I knew that Captain Train had "changed hands" a few months ago, so I suppose it's not surprising that the new owners want to rebrand it. I sure hope they don't change anything with their very user friendly website, as that's usually the first place I go when booking tickets.

I imagine an update for their App will be issued shortly.

I too have never used it.. I too book directly with respective railroad lines, but have heard others feel its easy to use, I hope the name change doesn't confuse anyone searching for the site.

Thanks, Priscilla, for the heads-up. I used it last year when I was unable to book on the official French train site. Sadly, it doesn't look like a return to France is in my 2017 future.

I love Captain Train and use that site exclusively for booking train travel in Europe. Like others have posted above, I certainly hope this rebranding doesn't affect their user-friendly site.

Captain Train was a great web site and operation. Hopefully that won't change with the new owner and name change.

Just a quick update...

Information found on the new website:

Our website is now accessible at www.trainline.eu We’ve changed the
logo and the colour schemes, though the interface and the product
remains exactly the same. You still won’t find any ads or booking
fees.

You can still enter, "captaintrain.com", & it will automatically take you to the new site.

They sent me an email the other day announcing this change. We had used Captain Train in the past and liked it, especially because the website was so easy to use ( I think it was called Capitainetrain when I first used it). I believe we can now use it for UK tickets, which is new? Next spring we will need tickets for the Thallys, Eurostar and UK travel. I would be happy to be able to purchase all tickets early in one fell swoop.

Priscilla, thanks to your notice here I was able to advise my boss of this today . . he loves Captain Train and I advised it was switching. Sure enough, by the time he'd brought up the screen, I saw it was now trainline.

Denny,

Trainline is not a new company. Trainline is based in the UK (since 1997) & they bought CaptainTrain in March of this year.

You can buy train tickets for a number of countries in Europe through them, but personally, I prefer to buy my train tickets from
each country's official railway company.

Last night I was helping a fellow traveler who was having trouble with the Renfe website ( Spain's Railway company)

I was going to suggest the Trainline website, but when I checked it, the trains on the desired route were not even listed!

Thank you, Priscilla. Good to know. It looks as if one can also buy the tickets applying the Two Together rail card which I learned about on this forum. I also learned about Loco2 here recently, but if Trainline can now accomodate all portions of our travel I may lean towards them. I'll be back in a few months I'm sure with questions of my own. I get more confused with each passing day. Thanks again.
