Future Tour in Romania?

Hi! I have been recently beginning to contemplate a trip in 2026. This year I am doing a trip, by car, through the US South. And also an RSE trip to Poland. So, as said, I.m just beginning to think about next year, 2026. In particular, I have been doing some reading and exploring and am giving some thought to visiting Romania. Being a solo traveler, and not knowing the language at all, I would most likely want to do so on a Rick Steves type tour. As far as I can see, RS does nothing in Romania. Thus, has anybody had any experience visiting Romania? In particular, any suggestions as to reputable and affordable tours? I like the RS style, rather than the “top-of-the-line” packages with the four and five star hotels! I know my question is rather general, but, as suggested, I’m just beginning to look into possibilities. Thanks in advance!

I have been on a few ocassions. Easier now that I live in a country with a shared border. You want to start a conversation with these guys: https://covinnus.com/ They will customize a tour any way you want. But for the record, a great many of RS hotels are four star.

By the way, funny thing, my name is Jim D.

Anyway, Romania is wonderful. So is Bulgaria and the Balkan states. You could spend months exploring and just scratch the surface of the region.

And dont forget to stop in Budapest on the way in or on the way out.

I have been to Bulgaria, the RS tour in late 2022. Great tour, loved it. That’s probably partially why I am looking to Eastern Europe again. Have also been to Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Thanks for the contact recommendation. Will look into it. And I won’t ask how “Jim D” becomes Mr. E! 😺

Jim, I have booked a Gate 1 tour of Romania for September of this year (the 12 day Classic Romania Tour). I have never taken a group tour before so I am testing the waters, and Gate 1 has gotten very good reviews here on this forum.

Their prices are quite reasonable as well—the one I am taking is around $2000 (not including airfare but including optional tours). I did book this during a sale where they were waiving the single supplement, but I think even without this, it's a pretty good deal.

Jim, I have been to Czech Rep, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Montenegro, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary. I have loved them all. Returning to Montenegro in May (fishing), maybe Bosnia & Herzegovina for fishing in the fall, maybe Ukraine in the Summer.

Probalby my least favorite Eastern European adventure was Croatia. But only in the context of the others. Otherwise a very interesting place.

We had a very nice holiday to Romania several years ago- I'm sure most tour groups take you to Transylvania but ensure you don't miss that region- beautiful scenery and lots of interesting castles (e.g. Bran, Peles). We found it easy to get around ourselves using the train and hiring a driver to take us to some of the big sites from Brasov. If you have time in Bucharest I definitely recommend Palace of the Parliament, the second biggest government building in the world after the Pentagon, and quite an architectural feat. We also had a very nice lunch at Caru cu Bere which I understand is a local institution (beer hall/tavern).

We did a Gate 1 Travel Danube river cruise that ended in Budapest and then included a six day bus tour of Romania. It was great.

We went to Romania this fall and thought it was lovely. We didn't spend much time in Bucharest but focused on Transylvania. We did not do a tour but rented a car. The countryside, in particular the mountain areas on the way to Brasov, are gorgeous.

Since you took the RS tour to Bulgaria, you perhaps had either Stefan or Yuri as your guide. Both wonderful guides! They have their own tour company, Lyuba Tours, that can arrange a tour in Romania, among other Eastern European and Central Asian destinations. You might want to contact them to see what they could do for you.

There is a group of Rick Steves tour guides that also guide their own tours during their "off" time. I just booked the Romania tour for next year with Tim Tendick. You can look it up on Guided-by.com.
