Funchal, Madeira Islands

Has anyone been to Funchal, the port city of the Madeira Islands? It's one of our stops on a transatlantic cruise in October. Any advice on what to see or do there?

No I haven't, but my parents stopped there in March as part of a Transatlantic crossing. They enjoyed their day, beautiful setting, and they tell the story of the wicker basket ride from Monte down to Funchal - quite hair raising.
