We're thinking of vacationing in the French Riviera. We enjoy smaller quaint towns on water with walkable shopping, restaurants, cafes etc. Would appreciate any ideas....Thanks so much!
Based on you description I recommend Antibes. It is covered in most guidebooks.

Antibes definitely, nicest sand beaches (a series of smallish beaches), nice marina, walled medieval center with an Art gallery and restaurant cafe area. The center is very walkable and there's a train station for getting up and down the coast. I went in September and it was great, still warm but not much crowds.
