Free Weekend -- Suggestions?

Hi all,

I will be mixing some business and personal travel. I will then have about 3 days to myself where I could theoretically go anywhere for a weekend, and I'm looking for suggestions.

Here's the degree of difficulty: I will have already been to Venice, and will be "Italy-ed out", and this weekend would sandwich between Amsterdam and Malaga. In recent years I have been to Brussels, Cologne, Andalucía, Geneva, Munich, Lisbon, Algarve Coast, Barcelona, and Valencia.

Rail is fine, or the $22 specials on Vueling are fine as well, but I will not have a car. Paris seems obvious, since I've not been, but maybe my wife would rather I take her and we're both surprised together? This would be early April, so maybe I could find a good soccer match as well?

My thanks in advance for suggestions -- and as a reward, I will share that my wife and I have a Rick Steves drinking game: we take a drink every time we hear him say "convivial". It makes the repeat watching more fun!

Thanks for that -- I forgot to mention the wife and I are planning London already. But Ireland might be on the table, since she's been and I have not

Welcome to the Forums with an interesting first post.

not everywhere is connected to everywhere well enough to sneak in a 3 day weekend easily.

Where will you be when you set off on this mini-break?

and this weekend would sandwich between Amsterdam and Malaga.

Hello,

Are you looking for a 3 day weekend that round trips back to Amsterdam because you have travel plans booked to Malaga from Amsterdam already? If so, I would suggest some place close to Amsterdam so you don't eat up time traveling. Bruges and Ghent would be a nice 3 day weekend. If you are looking for a larger city head to Berlin.

I would still go with Paris. I think if you go there for a short visit, it will give you a better feel of the neighborhoods, and perhaps make it easier when you and your wife head there for a longer stay.

Thanks for the suggestions! I will have already spent a weekend in Amsterdam, then a few days for business, and then this weekend, and then Malaga.

So, Porto sounds great. Ireland certainly. Berlin is interesting. Thought about Marseille, Lyon, or Nice as well, since I've never really experienced France except for about 12 hours at Mont Blanc. And I think Lyon is playing at home April 6.

Mind's not made up yet, but it's getting there. Thanks so much for these ideas.

Paris is an amazing city in many ways, so if you haven't been there that would be my suggestion.

I would (strongly) go with your inclination to wait for Paris with your wife. There are many other choices, Lyon sounds like a good one, particularly if you can get a ticket to the football match.

You could, most definitely, do Paris twice. Immersion-inducing repeat visits are criminally underrated! Just a thought.

Another vote for Lyon if you can work out transportation….or hiking in Switzerland depending on weather.

Save Paris for a trip with your wife.

3 days, pick a place close to where you are traveling from. Not sure where that is.

From Amsterdam, have you been to Brugges and Ghent?
