Hello, Im am planning my trip for next May and thinking of hitting these cities, i already have my tickets which land in Frankfurt and out of Rome. Im thinking of staying in Frankfurt the first night then train to Lucerne the next morning for 2 days then Milan for 2 days then Rome for 5. Is this a proper amount of time for these cities?
I think that is fine if that is what you want to do. Next year, the new Gotthard Base Tunnel will shave some time off the Luzern-Rome run.
Not sure why you selected Milan, it is a great city, but there are other Italian cities worth spending time. Lucerne is great if you want to see a bit of Switzerland, but note that Switzerland is about 50 per cent more expensive that Italy, Austria or Germany.
Venice or Florence would be better than Milan.
Five days in Rome is great.
Not sure why you choose to fly into Frankfurt? Was it cheaper than flying directly to Switzerland?
Yes the Frankfurt flight was very cheap. But after talking to my travel partner, we might just fly to Italy cheaply the day after. Since it's both of out first time in Italy we are thinking of doing Rome/Naples/Amalfi Coast.
I don't see how you could possibly skip Venice. Just riding the bus/boat back and forth up and down the Grand Canal is in itself enough to make for a profoundly unforgettable vacation. Just sayin'... { : > )
