France to Join "One Stop Security"

From USA TODAY's Airport Check-in column:

France has joined other European Union countries in waiving the requirement for air travelers who have already been screened at another European airport to be screened a second time when making flight connections. The so-called One-Stop Security, already allowed in the majority of EU countries, will be rolled out at French airports throughout 2009, says the International Air Transport Association.

IATA estimates that this will affect 6 million passengers and save $30 million a year. "It is a waste of time, effort and resources to ask passengers to stand again at security if they have already been checked by a competent screening authority a few hours earlier," says IATA's CEO Giovanni Bisignani, in a statement. The United Kingdom and Ireland have yet to join the pact.

I just returned from France on Friday and I was surprised by the security that I had to go through. I have been to paris twice. This time when checking in for flight we had to take all camera's, Laptops, any connection wires, cellphones, carabeners and such had to be taken out of your carry on. I have only had to take my laptop out before. Only certain people had to take off their shoes. It was a slow process. They saw a carabener in my carry on and I had to find it for them and show it to them? We also had a second bag check before we got on the plane. I don't mind the extra security because I know it is for our saftey, but it would be nice to know before you go so you can have it all ready to go through security.

Sometimes the added security is in response to an intelligence report that alerts them to certain threats. They respond by increasing their focus on certain items (in your case it sounds like anything with wires or metal).

These seemingly random changes in procedures are inconvenient but really not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

As long as I make my flight, they can look at whatever makes them comfortable. If I miss a flight, I'm sure I'll be upset.

At Schiphol they also like to "mix" things up a bit at the security checks. One time they made every passenger on my flight remove their shoes, sit on a chair, then each foot (not the shoes) was hand searched by one of the agents. On another occasion, each individual page on every passengers passport was was searched for concealed razor blades.
