France-Italy-Austria Itinerary help?

We're planning a two week trip the end of April to beginning of May and are looking for some advice. We have friends in Annecy, France we'll be spending the first few days with (April 28-May 1?), and friends in Austria we'll be spending May 7-10 with, but looking for advice in the middle. We've been to France a few times, but never Italy, and it has always been on the list, probably a little higher than Germany, so we were thinking of just working our way through Northern Italy. Maybe a few days in Milan and a few days in Venice? Are there there other places we should be looking? How much time in each? Would Switzerland or Germany be a good choice?
Our interests: food!; the obvious must see tourist things; outdoor activities (hikes and the like); etc. We generally like to spend a few days in a city before moving on to get a feel for it. I love smaller towns as well. Advice?

So you have 6 nights, May 1-2-3-4-5-6 between commitments. Where in Austria do you need to go? It is a long way to Vienna, less to Salzburg or Innsbruck.

But given that you need to be "somewhere" in Austria on May 7, you could probably fit in two stops. Milan is big, so if you like smaller towns, move on. How about Lake Como -- stay in Varenna -- for some hiking and lake cruising, then move on to Venice? I'd split 6 nights by spending 3 in each. Getting from Venice to wherever in Austria demands some research. Try Rome2Rio.com for travel time estimates.
