Four travel days by train from Regensburg to Salon-de-Provence?

Hi All!

Trying to be more specific as I seek advice!

We disembark from cruise in Regensburg on 3 Oct, and join friends in Salon-de-Provence four days later. Would be great to drive, but I think easier and more fun by train, stopping a total of three nights in interesting places.

We also have a quick cruise north from Aix-en-Provence to Lyon, so will be visiting that area (and a couple of days in Reims) later in October ... so, would prefer to take another path to southern France ... sorry if not making sense.

We recognize there are fast and slow trains, but since we're just sightseeing, it may not matter as much!

Three options?
1. westerly through Germany, then south in France
2. down through Switzerland and into southern France
3. south from Regensburg in Germany, through Switzerland and Italy

We have enjoyed training to smaller towns with easy access train stations to local B&B/hotels for quick overnight stays - pull our own bags, etc. Very casual approach.

I was hoping someone had done something like this, and could offer thoughts on routes and where to stay.

Thank you, All!

If you take the local train from Geneva to Lyon, you could then go to Viennne, France for an overnight. This former-Roman port is one of my favorite places to visit.

About 12 hours by train. I'd stop in one place for 3 nights.

The quickest route is Regensburg to Frankfurt, then direct train to Avignon. The first train leaves Regensburg around 10:30, the second ICE train stops in Baden-Baden, Strasbourg and Besançon. I liked Strasbourg, really liked Besançon from what I remember.

Beaune, Dijon and Dole are close to Besançon.
