four digit atm pin can't have any 0's ?

I dunno. Mine has two zeros, and it has worked fine for me in four countries.

I've read that cards having PINs that BEGIN with a zero may not work in ATMs in Europe (nothing said about the other three numbers). However, I don't know if what I've read is either accurate or up to date.

Mine BEGINS with a zero, and has worked fine every time I've tried it from 2004 to this past May.

I have never had a problem using a PIN with zeros in it in Europe.

I had used a pin with letters in it and found that does not work in Europe two visits ago. They only have numbers on their machine. Before my trip in September I went to the bank and they have a machine that changes the pin on the card while I watched. I also told them I would be in Italy, so they would allow internatonal withrdrawals without a problem. Maybe the "zero" someone is refering to is the "Letter O" which you cannot use.

Mine starts with "00" (that gives you 99 chances to guess it) and I have no problems.

Mine has a zero at the end and it works in every ATM with no problems. I have a travel buddy that had a zero at the beginning and it didn't work. My advice to you is to change your pin ASAP. Most banks and credit unions will let you reset your pin right at the branch. Also, while you are there you should notify the bank of what countries you are going to and the date range. Make sure they take care of it right there. Otherwise you might have your ATM card frozen for fraud while on your trip.

My husband and I were in Paris in September and didn't have a problem. My PIN starts with a 0.

I think that the zero not working in a PIN in Europe is just another "Urban legend". I have used three ATM cards in Europe and all contain the number 0 in the PIN. One even starts with zero and it has worked all six times I have tried it. I have had problems with ATM cards in Europe, but it was always due to maximim withdrawal amounts, not PINs.

And, BTW, ATMs in Colorado (as well as three other parts of the country that I know of) only have number pads and therefore only take numbered PINs.

The main problem is that some American PINS permit more than 4 numbers. If you have a PIN number with more than 4 numbers, it won't work in Europe. Also, as a side note, be sure to call your credit card and ATM people to let them know that you will be in Europe.
