Forum Fixes

So,
The 'new' Helpline has been around for a little while now and most of you have noticed that the most egregious bugs were fixed some time ago. We have just released another set of fixes and adjustments. Here they are:

Due to popular demand, we have put together a hack-y way to allow for underlining text. To make something underlined, select your text you want underlined and click the bold button and the italic button.

Bold + Italic = Underline

We have lightened the alternating background color where you see the list of available topics within each forum section. This will hopefully reduce the strain on your eyes as some of you had noted difficulty reading the list there.

We made some fixes for users of Internet Explorer 8 so that you could use it without text appearing in odd places around the screen. However, the layout here is still not accurate and we will not be making any more fixes for IE8. Less than 5% use it anymore and that number has decreased by half in the last year. If you feel stuck using IE8 because you are still running Windows XP, we highly suggest switching to a modern browser that is capable of rendering modern websites correctly. You might try downloading this browser.

By request, we added the OP's location to the initiating post of each topic.

We applied a fix to the time stamp on each post. The time should default to your own time zone, an improvement over forcing everyone to use Pacific Time as it was originally. EDIT: There is a bug with the deployment of this fix. We are working on making an adjustment. ANOTHER EDIT: We've fixed it. All new posts from here forward should have the correct local time for you.

We fixed some sorting issues related to sorting the list of topics.

We have noted the lack of email notifications being sent to the OP of a topic when a new reply is added to their topic. This is something we didn't build into the new Helpline, but it is something we will be able to add later. By later, we mean a few months. Thanks for your patience here.

Search... we are still waiting for Yahoo/Bing to re-index the new Helpline so that the links to Helpline posts in our website's Search aren't broken. Yes, we have submitted our site for re-indexing. We have noted that Google has re-indexed much of the Helpline, so you might try going to google.com and enter your search term along with "rick steves helpline" in your search (or just used advanced search if you are familiar with that).

There are various other bug fixes and back end improvements as well.

Short of any issues that make the Helpline unusable, this is likely the last wave of updates until the next set of planned updates in January.

Good Job.

Time to have a well-deserved rest, and here's raising a metaphorical pint to you.

I agree with Nigel, you deserve some travel time of your own now!

It seems to me that some of these are old fogey fixes. Readability for old eyes, restoring old fashioned underlining, fixes for ancient browsers. Guess you know your demographic, don't you?

I guess some people are never satisfied. That is about as cheap a shot as your can get. If that is the best you can contribute, sign off !!!

"...some of these are old fogey fixes"

"How old are you?"

"Ten," answered Tangle.

"You don't look like it," said the lady.

"How old are you, please?" returned Tangle.

"Thousands of years old," answered the lady.

"You don't look like it," said Tangle.

"Don't I? I think I do. Don't you see how beautiful I am!”

Webmaster, thank you very much for all of your hard work!

I seem to have inadvertently offended some of you. I'm sorry for that. It just kind of amused me that some of the user-requested fixes were things a 50 year old would want, as opposed to a 20 year old. I meant no offence, and I'm sorry any was taken.

(And by the way, I'm 50, need reading glasses constantly, find some sites too difficult to read, love punctuation, and only recently stopped using IE because I'd only just realized there were alternatives. And my investments and business are doing just fine, thank you very much.)

Something I'd like to see back are the post counts near the name or somewhere on the threads. This helps, at least me, to easily know if a person is a newbie who might not know exactly the dynamics of Helpline, or just someone who didn't bother to write a proper question with an appropriate title (thus not warranting my time to answer them) despite being a more experienced user.

Agree with Andre, second the suggestion, for the reasons given.

"Can't you see how beautiful I am?"

Implying that it is the wisdom that comes with experience and age that makes for beauty not physical characteristics.

Webmaster,

Thank you for all the work this time. I will try to keep my complaints down (don't have any yet) until this time next year when the next two (or possibly three) debug workings get finished.

I have enjoyed the new helpline even if there never is a Classic View again. I don't think our webmaster and helpers have the sort of free time (meaning nothing to do and getting bored) to do that at the moment. If ever.

I hope nothing big come up before the next debug session. Or that can't wait for it.

I don't recall the original poster ever having their post count listed by their name. The post counts are listed on the responses. Post counts don't really translate to experience, anyway. Someone could lurk here for years, sucking up all of our accumulated wisdom, and never post questions. If they eventually did post, they aren't newbies in the same way as someone who comes here via a Google search.

Looks like the time stamp has been solved as my recent posts were logged at my actual time.

Frank, the 6th paragraph in the OP speaks about that.

LOL! That would be great, though - Last week I completely forgot I had started a thread, because I wasn't being notified of any responses :-(

But...but...the bold/italics notation is now 'underline'?!? Bummer. (I DID notice that Jon's underline test on the other thread was now actually underlined and not 'bold + italics'). And how about some strikethrough? It might make some of us forget that the new underline = the death of bold + italics...

(Apparently, some of you haven't paid close attention to Karen/Fort Wayne's previous posts...otherwise, you wouldn't have had a cow. Of course she wasn't being an a**; it's called deadpan, light ironic sarcasm, black humor, whatever you like - but certainly not rudeness...)

I am unsure if it is my computer or the new "fixes" on the website.

When I look at the postings, many of them do not line up with the left margin. The postings seem to be indented. Not only are the postings oddly spaced across the page but sometimes, the lines in the postings don't line up with the left margin.

Is it new format or my computer??????

While we are wishing for something. Does anyone know how to bulk delete PMs? I have about 200 PM going back a few years. Decided to clean them up but realized that the only way I know is to open each email and delete it. Anyway to do it faster?

Frank, I can't find a way to delete them like we used to by clicking the box and then deleting all of the checked ones in one shot. I do have some that I save, but I best be starting to delete the others if it is going to be that tedious.

Nancy, thank you for your response but I will have to confess that you totally lost me. What is IE, version 8? Where would I find the Webmaster's post for paragraph 8?

My problem still exists. Tom from Chicago's post starts with right side alignment but then goes to left side allignment. Your post and Frank's are aligned on the left margin. But Nancy from Bloomingdale's post is in the center of the page.

Again, my computer or the "fixings"? Thanks!

Bev

Probably would be helpful to id your computer and the version (number) of your operating system. Second, do you know which web browser you are using?

Just noticed a new wrinkle. If you edit an old posting, it jumps back to the top of the pile instead of staying in its original position as in the past. I frequently edit my mistakes when I notice them later.

Andrew,

Thanks for adding the underline feature. I'm now a happy camper!

One thing I've noticed is that the post count can vary depending on which Thread I'm looking at. It's only out be a few numbers, but kind of an odd thing?
