Deirdre, if you don't get many responses here, try the and knowledgeable people there, and I have seen several discussions of Formula 1 logistics there in the past year.

I'm just jealous. Do you want somebody to carry your bags? Hold your umbrella? Bring you refreshments during the race? Get me in and I'll do all that. Seriously, I know nothing about Spain which is why I never answer questions on it. I know quite a lot about F1 but can't help you. Just don't want you to think you are forgotten.

I'm not 100 percent sure where the course is located. The Barri Gothic is a good place to stay. We'll be there in April and are staying at Hostel Campi - which is a small budget hotel a couple of blocks from Placa Catalunya. The square has a metro stop which should allow you to get around the city easily. Check tripadvisor.com for reviews on hotels that meet your preferences. Each hotel has a "map it" button, if it's close to a metro station, you shouldn't have trouble getting to the race from anywhere in the city.

I assume this is the Formula 1 race event. There is also a super budget Formula One motel chain in Europe. Gee i would carry your bags also.

The location is north and east of Barcelona. Here are transport directions from the website (Circuit de Catalunya, or www.circuitcat.com): By train from Barcelona Line 2 Cercanías RENFE Barcelona-Maçanet Massanes. From the train stations Sants, Passeig de Gracia or Clot to the Montmeló train station. Service available every 30 minutes. Trip duration: 23 minutes. the you still have a 30-minute walk to the location; but apparently there is a free shuttle bus over this section if you have tickets to the event. Bus and taxi are not recommended due to traffic jams. Since you can pick up the train at Passeig de Gracia Station, I would suggest a hotel near there, or near Placa Catalunya, which is a nice area and very convenient. Hotel Sixty Two is right on Passeig de Gracia; you could also consider the H10 Catalunya on the square, Praktik Rambla which on the next street, Rambla de Catalunya. And there are lots of other choices. We sayed last May at Hotel Jazz, about 2 blocks from Place Catalunya, and Loved it. The rooftop terrace with pool is great for late-afternoon relaxing before heading out for dinner.

Thx for all your suggestions. My husband is the one traveling to the formula 1 destination, I will be doing touring. Looking at using Airbnb also seems a cheaper alternative though I loved what I saw at Hotel Jazz.
