For those of us with hotel points to spend, what Hilton hotels(also Doubletree, etc) have you liked?

The post about a Hilton on a island near Venice started me thinking that some of us choose free over atmosphere when choosing hotels. I'll start-my husband loves the Trafalgar in London-and it is in a wonderfully convenient location! We also like Euston-convenient to transportation, walking distance from British Museum, and a good afternoon tea.

My absolute favorite Hilton is the Helsinki Strand! It is adjacent to the sea, in a nice neighborhood near a grocery store, and within easy walking distance to many sites. Location aside, the breakfast buffet is phenomenal! The staff were very friendly as well. I would never stay anywhere else in Helsinki.

I could only dream of going to hotels enough to have points!!

Your Helsinki place sounds fantastic . . I love Helsinki but stayed at the Klaus K, which I loved!!

Favorite: Hilton Munich city center. Convenient with an entrance directly on the subway and it serves the most amazing breakfast I have ever seen.

Least favorite(as in I will never darken their door again) was Hilton Amsterdam Schiphol. Even with a "free room" you can't get out the door for less than 100 euros because there is a fee for everything.

The Double Tree right by Victoria Station in London was great, we stayed for free five nights on our 2013 England trip. Also the Hilton in Athens for two nights in 2011. This was at a time of frequent strikes and we were nervous about getting to the airport in case of strike. It gave us real peace of mind to have a professional 24 hours reception staff. These Hiltons seemed pretty upscale to us, and it was really nice to have a business class hotel in these big cities. Sometimes a change from the quirkiness that comes with family run hotels is nice, especially in big cities. We save our Hilton points for places that are especially expensive for lodging, like London. Unfortunately they have been ratcheting up the points required in recent years, so it's like having a bank account denominated in a rapidly inflating currency. Also: my Hilton Points from using the (no annual fee) Hilton Honors AMEX card, not from paying to stay at Hiltons. You can get points by staying there too, but they add up faster by just using the card for gas, online purchases, anything. We also normally get free breakfast because we are Hilton Honors members.

We stayed at the Hilton at Heathrow and really liked it. I had never stayed at a Hilton before and I was very impressed. I agree with VS, it's very enjoyable to stay at an upscale business class hotel after the quirky European family run hotels. The high quality sheets, pillows, bedding was a treat at the end of a 2 month trip. We had to pay but it was affordable and well worth it.

My husband checks the Hilton website for deals before using points-sometimes he thinks it's better to pay(and get more points) than use lots of points. The Trafalgar has decent deals at slow times. And if you are Hilton Honors, the free breakfast really saves money. They are usually a buffet and we can skip lunch.

Kim, you might not dream about staying at hotels often enough to get points if you traveled for work as often as my husband does-3 trips to Europe and 1 to Singapore are scheduled in '17, not to mention travel in the U.S (he has been to DC more than 100 times!). Points and hotel miles are the mercenary way I have learned to accept his absences!

We had a 5 night stay at the Hilton at the Copenhagen airport last year. It's at the airport but public transportation to city center takes about 10 minutes and is connected to the hotel..
We play the Hilton point game. My husband travels a lot for work and usually stays at Hampton Inns enough to get him Diamond status so we always have access to the Executive floor. Free breakfast and, in Europe, free drinks. He pays for his work travel with the Hilton card that's in my name so l always have at least gold status. We've managed several nights each year using points. We just returned from a five night stay in London and didn't pay anything for hotel, breakfast or pre-dinner cocktails. Hilton has been good to us but I suppose we've also been good to Hilton.

We loved the Hilton Mulino Stuckey in Venice, as well as the Marriott property there. Probably my favorite though was the Marriott property in Barga Italy. Incredible property!

Cala - Yes, excellent point. It's easy to ascribe glamour to something from afar, to something that one is not experiencing!

I subscribe to a few blogs that post points values each month. I am Hilton Diamond and Marriott/Starwood Gold. I use a combination of stays and credit cards to accumulate points. Based on the points values, I will decide whether to use points or pay cash. To me, it's about maximizing the value of my hard earned points. About 10 years ago, Hilton had a deal for elites where you could stay at any property worldwide for 6 nights for only 175,000 points. The best value I ever received was the Waldorf Cavaleiri in Rome. The going rate ate the time was over 600 euros or $840 per night. It's not a great location, but that is one great hotel! I have also done the same deal at the Hilton Sorrento Palace. Both have an executive lounge so we got free breakfast and evening cocktails and food. And for those who are soft drink addicts, the free sodas are a great savings. I recently cashed in points at the Conrad in London. If you use points, the 5th night is free. Another great hotel between Westminster and Buckingham Palace. One other point-many Hilton properties in Europe don't see too many Diamond elite customers. The staff falls all over themselves to take care of you. It's pretty humbling but nice! My son and I stayed at a Hilton Garden Inn in Seville last June. The manager of the hotel came out of the office behind the check-in desk when she heard me tell the desk clerk my name. She had been waiting for us to arrive so she could personally greet us. She was extremely helpful with everything we needed. There is also a pretty decent DoubleTree in Amsterdam adjacent to Centraal train station. Great bar/nightclub on the top floor. That being said, make sure your room is a few floors below at least!

London-Hampton Inn by Waterloo station. Great breakfast. Comfortable rooms and beds though on the smaller side. I loved being down the street from Waterloo station because we had access to so many tube lines and trains.

Italy- I liked the Hilton in Sorrento too. Beautiful views and a great pool to cool down after sightseeing on a hot day. I have posted about that one before.

I am looking forward to my stay at the Waldorf in Rome this summer. I was able to get 4 nights free using points. It was the same number of points to stay there as it was to stay the other Hiltons in Rome. So that was an easy decision!!

EDIT
Looks like Stephen and I are the same page! I am glad to know you enjoyed your stay in Rome as well. I agree that I prefer to accumulate points when I can and use those points to extend my stay or use the money elsewhere. I think chain hotels can still have a nice "atmosphere", even if it is a different type of atmosphere from a family run European style hotel.

Here are my thoughts in no particular order. We are Diamond members but have been Gold in the past. I am not sure if it still applies today, but we were able to use the Executive Lounge as Gold Members in Europe.
We just did a trip through the Christmas markets in Europe and stayed at Hilton Hotels. we used points, points an pay, and paid.
The Hilton is Strasbourg was nice. Good location, decent price. executive lounge
Hilton Prague in Old Town. Very nice, great location for our purposes. Great breakfast buffet and Executive lounge
Hilton Vienna Plaza. Great location, best room darkening curtains I have ever seen. Good executive lounge.

Hilton Budapest (not city). Rick Steves tour guide states on their podcast that they prefer Pest side over Buda because of the night life and activity. I prefer this hotel. Great location, ask for a view towards Pest. It can't be beat. One of our favorites. The executive lounge was closed for renovation so I don't have an opinion.
Hilton Molino Stucky. Great property, in my opinion. We were given a room that was more like an apartment. You look over the water towards St. Marks Square. Roof top pool
Double Tree - Westminster was a nice hotel with a good location. we could see the River Thames from our room
Hilton Liverpool City Centre - Another very nice hotel with a great location
The Hilton at the Heathrow was a very nice hotel also with a good executive lounge. We stayed there the night before we flew back to the states.
I hope that you find this useful and not long winded. I do not think that you can go wrong with any of the Hilton brand of properties. My wife traveled for business and has said she prefers the Garden Inns over the Hampton Inns at that level for what it is worth.

Yes, that Hilton up on Castle Hill is a remarkable exception to the usual preference to stay in Pest. The view from there is so singular, and the fact of staying right on the hill, that it would definitely merit consideration where most hotels over on the Buda side wouldn't.

The problem with hotel points is that they're usually never mom & pop type places which are some of the best places I've ever stayed. I've stayed in Europe only once with free marriott points and while it was nice to have "free" room it wasn't near where I wanted to be. I've stayed in the 5* Hilton Molino Stuckey in Venice, and I can say I would not do that again as it's not on Venice Island but rather a different island separated by the Guidecca Canal which required crossing every time I wanted to venture over to Venice Island.

And there's the posh 5* JW Marriott resort near Venice on it's own private island...but I ask why do you want to visit Venice and stay on a private island that's not in Venice? That just means more travel to and fro whenever you want to see or do anything.

Points can be good - but I would never let points dictate my European Vacation.

The Calivari in Rome can't be beat-stayed there on points for 4 nights and was blown away by the room, view, exec lounge, and staff. Also, spent a long weekend at the Trafalgar and loved the location and the staff's attentiveness, along with the Consierge (?) snagging us tickets to the theater on short notice(good thing the stay was with points!)
Also, the Hilton Sorrento above the city gives spectacular views along with nice buffet and staff.
As far as "business type" city Hilton's, would recommend both the Orly and CDG in Paris, Hilton airport in Rome, The Hilton Manchester(UK) and it's 23rd floor executive lounge, all of which I have stayed at using points or a combination of €'s and points. Sadly, the 2 Hilton's in Palermo have left the system, however, the one on the bay is a wonderful old style Grand Hotel in Ambiance, Stall, Appointments, and garden-in fact, DW dropped an earring down the sink drain and they cheerfully dismantled it and saved it.
However, what I consider a hidden gem is the Hilton at Giridano Naxos below Taromina: wonderful, attentive staff, all rooms facing the bay, and totally responsive to any guests' needs.

The Trafalgar is in a great location for me. It also has big rooms for London and a nice breakfast buffet.

The Hilton London Gatwick has nice rooms in the new wing. I have not stayed in the older wing.

The Hilton Frankfurt airport has nice upgraded rooms. Only stayed there once.

Hilton Barcelona was really nice, but it's not centrally located.

I got to stay at a suite at the Hilton Vienna. It was so nice that on a rainy evening I just decided to stay in and enjoy the room.
