For Ladies only (just because the guys won't be able to answer this one!)

Ladies, try as I might, I just do not travel well when it comes to wearing makeup and being able to look in Europe the way I do at home. Carefully applied makeup and looking halfway decent boarding the plane, by the end of the trip it has all melted off and I look awful. I have just given up...don't even try anymore and usually just skip the entire process while travelling. Problem is, I look in a mirror and wish I was presenting a better face to the crowd. What do you all do? Keep your same routine? Modify it a bit? Carry all the stuff and never use it? (that's me). Not a major issue, I know, I've just always wondered what others end up doing.

I never wear make-up during a long flight. However, if I need to look presentable upon arriving, I simply go to the washroom upon arrival right at the airport. There's enough time to freshen up and apply some make-up while waiting for my checked luggage to arrive.

I don't wear any make up at any time, not on vacation or day to day, unless I am going out in the evening for something special. This saves me lots of time and money. If I look tired, so what?

I know I am in a minority here, but I just am not comfortable wearing make-up, not even lipstick. Just prefer the natural look and feel. Husband does too.

I stopped wearing makeup when I realized I could sleep an extra ten minutes. Best suggestion is to fly bare-faced and put on makeup when you land - possibly a leaner version of your normal routine.

I have a basic makeup kit. It's a little zipper pouch with a few carefully chosen items. I've perfected applying it in 5 minutes and it looks much better than no makeup with almost no time and space.

My basic kit includes:
tinted moisturizer (or a very light foundation, something that can go on with fingers and makes skin look better)
basic blush stick - a color that is easy to apply, not dramatic, and stick form so no brush needed)
mascara
a two-color eyeshadow duo - a light pink for the base and a medium brown for lids, easy neutral colors that just swipe on in a minute
a brush for the eyeshadow
lip balm
one neutral color, easy application lipstick
powder and mini brush

So my advice is to pare it down to easy to apply, neutral colors, just a few items, practice so you have a routine you're happy with that takes under 10 minutes, and then use it if it will make you feel better.

I don't wear it on the plane, if I want it when I land I can do it in the bathroom at the airport or on the plane. Again, 5 minutes, fits in a pouch in a purse so there's no need to plan ahead.

I always wear makeup now - ever since one early morning when I ran into Dunkin Donuts without makeup and they gave me the Senior discount (I DID NOT ASK FOR IT!!)
I have a routine similar to Miranda's, the basics, all creams or powders, no liquids, so everything is in a small pouch in my purse. I always travel with a soft-pack of facial cleansing towelettes, so just before arrival I pop into the washroom, wipe off the old and reapply. I can do it in about three minutes.

I find on the plane its not too bad. I feel grubby but when I look in the mirror everything is more or less where it should be. But when I'm doing my traveling I agree - my makeup melts (if warm out) and my hair is a frizzy mess. I do still try to set out in the morning looking presentable rather than give up altogether. And I find that when I look at the photos, I don't look as bad as I thought I did at the time.

I do wear make up, I use Bare Minerals. I know it is a bit on the expensive side. But, it lasts forever, it is good for my really senesitive skin, and it doesn't make me break out. So, to me, it is worth it. I love how it feels on my face and it looks really natural. I figure it is my 5 minutes of pampering a day. Also, it packs light.

In my bag:
Moisterizer. I put my moisterizer in an old contact lens case. It is a perfect amount and it fits easily into my 311 bag.

Foundation. The power foundation packs easily and has SPF in it. win win:)

Blush.

Warmth.

4 eyeshadows. 2 basic every day 2 fun colors (you could get by with just the two though)

Eyeliner

Mascara

Lip Gloss/Tinted Chapstick

Brushes (5 total)

As others have stated, I do not wear makeup on the plane. Upon arrival, I jump in the bathroom, wash my face, and quickly add makeup.
My typical makeup kit consists of four small items: foundation powder, blush, mascara, and lip gloss. It's on under five-minutes and is not at all heavy, so I really don't have much issue translating it on vacation. My overall "beauty" kit includes face wash, moisturizer, and hairbrush, so not high-maintance in general and a light load. Have you thought about experimenting with less at home and see how it feels. Maybe you would prefer that overall (timewise, financially, emotionally, etc.), and if not, at least you know what to travel with.

My routine while traveling is pretty much the same as at home -

moisturizer/sunscreen
BB cream
stick blush that also works as a lip color
lip gloss
eye liner pencil
mascara

For evenings, I throw in a couple of eye shadow sticks one in a pale cream color and a brown one. This all fits in a small (2' x 6") mesh bag that goes in my "personal" carry on item (bb cream and moisturizers in 3-1-1 bag). Takes me about 5 minutes to apply in the morning.

During the day I only re apply lip gloss/lip color as needed and by the end of day just need a touch up before going out. I think the key is to use products that last well and above all keep it simple!

I cannot go with no make-up at all. Just to look "natural" I need something to cover up the rosacea or people ask me how the heck I got such a bad sunburn ... To keep it to a bare minimum I use BB cream. Add to that a tinted lip balm (I have to use some lip balm anyways) and maybe some mascara. That's it.

This is probably a stupid question, but what is BB cream?

I think it stands for Beauty Balm. There is also a CC cream that is even more high powered. I would describe BB cream as a high-powered tinted moisturizer with highlighter. It's going with me on my next trip.

There is not enough "outer beauty" for me to travel without make-up, but my list looks like most here. I apply before my flight, use a baby-wipe before we land and reapply the moisturizer, concealer and BB cream. My eye make -up seems to withstand the trip.

My real problem is the hair issue.

I suggest bringing a travel size make-up palette (Lancome's ones are most popular and versatile ranging from $35-$70) and it usually is a palette and when you open it it has several shades of eyeshadows, several lipcolor shades, a concealer, a powder, a blush tiny mascara, and tiny liner, and all the different tiny brushes u need. It's good to travel with all-in-one compact so u dont need individual regular size items to put in a make-up bag. Otherwise, the BB cream is awesome because its actually an all in one product that has sunscreen, tint, moisturizer, illuminator-highlighter, and some firming/lifting effects depending on which brand you buy (its better for the normal/dry skin types rather than oily/combination skin types though because they can be a little heavy due to the sunscreen/moisturizer/foundation combo.

for those who dont want to use ANY type of make-up, just remember 2 things: sunscreen (preventing aging/wrinkles/lines/skin cancer) and the Yves Saint Laurent touche eclat pen!! thats the 1 item all celebrities and make-up users who are traveling should use. One swipe to blend under eyes, cheekbones, temples and you are radiant and luminous on and off the plane!

A little lip balm and mascara will greatly enhance too though. =)

The question of how to keep make-up retouch free for off the plane is primer to set as a base and hold the makeup on, longlasting make-up foundation, and setting powder to set and reset your face after you get off the place and blot excess moisture and oils =)

*Lancome has an awesome 24hr longlasting retouch free foundation called teint idole 24/hr that is awesome for the combination/oily skin ladies and won't clog pores but smooths out imperfections and evens out complexion and conceals spots!

I wear make every day.. but no one realizes it..the trick is not to look "made up" but like better "natural" you. So its simple for me.. I use a liquid concealer ( kind that comes in a tube with a sponge tip applicator to dot it on with, I blend it with a make up sponge) only wear I need it , around nose to conceal some broken blood veins.. tiny bit at outside and inside corner of eyes to cover darkness, blush, and mascara. I don't wear eyeshadow or eyeliner. I wear L'Oreals all day lipstain.. works great.

I don't wear mascara on the plane. I sometimes put some on when I am arriving.

For a long overnight flight? No makeup. If I had a long flight and needed to go straight into a taxi to a business meeting, then I've got plenty of time to put on some makeup just before landing so it's fresh upon arrival. It's not good for your skin to sleep with makeup on, and naturally it's going to look like crap after 10 hours of hanging around an airport and then crossing an ocean. But if you absolutely can't bear the thought of being in public without some makeup, then pare it down to get that "no makeup" makeup look - a little bit of BB/CC cream and a really good corrector (like Bobbi Brown) with a little bit of navy mascara (to help hide the jet-lagged look around the eyes) and a sheer lipgloss should be plenty to get you through.

While at home I have lots of different color palettes to choose from, I try to travel with makeup products that don't need to be stuck in a 3-1-1 bag (bareMinerals powder foundation or concealer instead of liquid), makeup which can pull double-duty (e.g., BeneTint or Tarte Cheek Stain which can also double as lip color), and I stick to mostly neutral colors and throw in a couple products that can transform day to evening makeup (e.g., 1 darker shade of eyeshadow to add contrast/depth - I leave the quad shadows at home, a liquid eyeliner and a red lipstick can give you a variety of looks as you can choose to highlight either your eyes or your lips).

It may sound weird but I wear way more makeup in Europe than I do at home. I am taking photos and getting pictures taken of me so I want to look my best when doing a slide show. On the plane though, I keep it basic; just eye liner and mascara. I will wash my face in the morning prior to landing and apply a quick line to each eye and slap back on the mascara. I also don't wear my contact lens on the plane; just my glasses. So maybe my first day, I am not looking too glamorous but try to look nice for the remainder of the time.

I hardly ever wear make up at home much less on vacation. If I know my husband and I have a special eveing planned I will wear it then. But we leave when the sun comes up and don't want to wsste time putting make up on. Do what ever feels right to you.

I do not wear much makeup. When traveling, I carry a stick concealer, which is applied in a half moon shape under each eye to conceal dark shadows. Also I dot this on blemishes. It matches my skin tone, or is one shade lighter; Physicians Formula, for its hypoallergenic quality. I apply blush lightly to my cheeks. That's all.

For a dressy occasion, I will add eye shadow, liner, mascara, and lipstick or lip gloss. For everyday wear, I stopped using eye makeup years ago due to the fact that I was allergic to many of the product lines sold in department stores. I also got tired of carrying a huge travel bag of makeup, different shades of eye shadow, etc., so now I don't.

We always bump into people we know at the airport or the lounge, so I wear a little make up till we get to the long haul flight then once in the air, I use a remover wipe and take everything off and apply moisturizer. During the trip, I wear my normal makeup (which isn't much) but I make it a point to reapply and touch up each time I am in the restroom and I also carry a compact brush and hairspray that I also use.

My makeup on a trip is the same as at home - moisturizer/sunscreen, blush, eyeliner, and maybe a little oil-control powder. I might also use a little Blistex to give my lips a little natural color, but usually I don't.

I second the Bare Minerals. It doesn't feel caked on and looks natural on your skin. Other items I take are; mascara, eye liner (pencil), lip balm, 24 hr lipstick, blush and my Urban Decay eye palette (small, so easy to pack) I also use Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing sheets, which are great for removing the oil build I get when on a stuffy plane without removing my makeup. I've noticed when I use them, it looks as if I've just put on fresh makeup. If I'm picky enough, I'll bring Oil of Olay makeup removing towelettes, remove my makeup and reapply before the plane lands.

I have no problem sticking to my usual routine: tinted moisturizer, any concealer or brightener I may need cream blush, a sweep of eyeshadow, and lin gloss or pencil (pencil is better for travel due to the liquids thing). I don't use mascara in the normal course of thing because my lashes are dark, so I leave it at home. I recently started using primer, which I love a lot, but would probably leave it home instead of taking it traveling.

Maybe it's being I'm oily skinned, but I don't do well with makeup and travel. Not just planes, but even long train or car rides tend to make me feel disheveled and gross.

I've recently discovered BB cream and it's amazing. I can wear it and feel comfortable going outside without makeup. It's really just a tinted moisturizer/sunscreen but it provides a lot of coverage. I'm using the relatively cheap L'Oreal stuff and I adore it. I think from now on when traveling I'll wear JUST that and maybe a bit of concealer, then wash my face and reapply full makeup when arriving at my destination.

As for hair, I usually just put it out of the way, because long travel ruins my hair as well. I just shower or at least restyle once I check into the hotel...
