Flying through Ataturk

Following a Rick Steves tour in the Fall, we are flying from Dubrovnik to Bologna via Istanbul. Does anyone know if it will be necessary to go through Passport Control or Customs at Ataturk? I assume that we will be behind "security curtain" the entire time we are in the airport.

You will not go through PC or Customs. When you get off the plane, you will see a "transfers" sign, go in that direction and will end up in the terminal behind security; there, check the boards for your connecting gate, however, if you have more than an hour, I wouldn't go to the gate immediately unless you want to hang out in the area-the gates are pretty basic and there will be nothing happening until about 40 minutes before flight time. In the general area, there is lots of pretty good shopping and some really tasty food stands that won't "hurt" you.

The airside of Ataturk is chock-full of shopping and eating/drinking options. Be prepared for steepish prices. Look for the stacks of Turkish delight boxes for sale. There are usually lots of samples, lots of flavors.
