Bosnia & Herzegovina long delayed tour and fly fishing

EDIT: The following is one of the sweetest trips that I have taken in quite a while. If you love and find yourself returning to London, Paris and Rome time after time, this might be your cup of tea, but if you are looking for a one-off experience with very different culture and aesthetics: some cities but a lot village, then BiH and Montenegro might be a very enjoyable change from the ordinary.

Oh. Bosnia & Herzegovina is abbreviated as BiH in the local language. I am typing on a cell phone so BiH it is.

So, here I sit in Belgrade, and this is installment 1 of a 7 day trip.

First flight at 9:45am was on time, no issues, taxi to airport arrived early had more time for breakfast in the airport. There were no lines for security or passport control and only a short line to check my bag of fishing gear. My clothing is in a backpack and i doubt it weighs 10lbs. Wore a sports coat for dinner plans in Sarajevo. Nothing weighed, nothing measured at checkin or at the gate.

Note to self: Air Serbia flies ATR72's. The best legroom is row 1. ATR's board from the back, so row 1 is last off. But I doubt the plane holds 75 people, doesn't take long.

Belgrade airport has been renovated a little since my last trip. Looks nice. I few years ago, I found a café near some of the further out gates that had good spinach baklava. It's still here, so that's lunch.

2.5 hours late reaching Sarajevo. But thats okay. Taxi driver wanted 25 euro from the airport but I negotiated him down to 20 euro and a 5 euro tip. Clever!?

Checked in, hotel Sana. First time for this one. I Ike it a lot. My new "goto". Then headed out for some proper ćevapčići. I missed that as much as anything here. Now sitting outside at my favorite wine bar. No idea what the name is, but its out the front door of Hotel Old Town which is also a very good hotel.

So far, taxi = cash, ćevapčići = cash, wine = cash, my up coming hotel in Mostar = cash, driver = cash. ATMs here are expensive so bring Euros.

It's day 2, and I checked out of my Sarajevo hotel. Disturbing discussion with the desk clerk. He traveled from Mostar to Montenegro recently. At the border the BiH guards demanded to see his Mostar hotel receipt. He showed it. It did not show all the proper taxes had been paid and they tried to fine him for the error. So he insisted I keep my receipt and showed me the tax lines so I could point them out if asked. I later told my fishing guide the story and he confirmed that it happenes.

My friend that runs a pretty amazing tourism business in the Balkans arranged all my transfers in BiH. Her name is Dijana and if you do a search of the Rick Steves forum "Dijana" you can find contact info and reviews. For a place like BiH, for me at least, its just easier with someone that has experience with these things.

My driver arranged by Dijana, Elvis, was on time. Oh, why the name Elvis? BiH is a pretty fractured culture and the parents wanted a name that would not identify him as one group or another so he would have fewer obstacles in life.

Anyway 3.5 hour trip ahead. For a first visit one would make it an all day excursion with stops in Travnik and Jajce. https://youtu.be/NBna529LNSk?si=VR4FfDSOkWCy87bo and.
https://youtu.be/ddBglLbvuhA?si=WPa7Ixg1k26xUhwa. Elvis is a licensed guide, and he could do that for you too. Its trip 4 for me, so I've done all the stops in the past, and they are great.

The hotel is still beautiful, and i have a balcony room looking at the river. It's almost 4 pm. I have a plate of cheese and meat suitable for 4 people and a cold beer. Time to relax: https://youtu.be/QNpUWXV3RkI?si=GZOeLhxgCfvz7xDl. Tomorrow fishing.

Day 3, fishing: I have fished a half dozen countries and none have been a better experience than BiH. I dont know why I keep trying new places.

It is about the entirety of travel experiences. So, a good hotel in a scenic location, very good food, Ado the fishing guide being outstanding in knowing the rivers and techniques and a pleasure to spend a day with, perfect weather and some amazing catches. One Rainbow was 30+ inches and took me 25 minutes to bring him in. Perfect. That and a few 18 to 24 inch Grayings that put up 5 minute fights was all I needed for an excellent morning. They all went back to the river to grow old and fat.

Tomorrow we try another river a bit closer to Croatia and go for quantity.

Oh, BiH unlike most of Eastern Europe that is a Level 1 State Dept advisory, BiH is a level 2 advisory like Germany and France because of:

Exercise increased caution in Bosnia and Herzegovina due to terrorism,
crime, and land mines.

Reassuring?

Its summer but they are preparing for winter. I keep seeing businesses with literally hundreds of ricks of firewood, which leads to an obvious assumption about gas or electric heat.

I have been to few places with so much unspoiled nature, and yet the roads are good. I have been to few places with so much diversity living in peace. Elvis, a Muslim, is a licensed Jewish Cultural guide. He described how the Muslims helped save jews in WWII, and how Jews helped save Muslims in the 90's Balkan war. The BiH half of BiH is about half Muslim, and you cant be anywhere without hearing the call to prayer during the day.

Day 4. Fishing Day 2. While yesterday we went for quality, today it was quantity. So Ado's man Hassan was the guide and drove us about 90 minutes to the Una River. In 3 hours I had caught not less than 30 decent trout, mostly twice the size of what you get if you went to a nice restaurant and ordered whole pan fried trout. Hassan spoke a little more English than I speak Hungarian. But his German is near perfect so ... well. I dont speak German either. Still he was an excellent guide.

More beautiful landscapes, waterfalls, mountains and a conspicuous absence of wind generators destroying the visual environment. (Hey, even if necessary, they aren't beautiful. They aren't in Yellowstone Park either).

Day 5, Fishing Day. We went for quality and landed a monster trout and played another for about 15 min before the line tangled on a rock and I lost him. This guy moved so fast he almost played out all of my line.

I'm not great at this, but Ado took the time to help me get better so we spent quite a bit of time practicing casting skills. A very good day.

Day 6, back to Sarajevo. I just checked out of the hotel. Maybe among the most enjoyable but affordable stays of all my travels.

Beautiful 4 hour, including lunch stop, drive to Sarajevo. Sarajevo hotel waiting for me with open arms.

2 hour Evening tour of the city, dinner which included treking hundreds of feet vertical, bed ... pooped.

Day 7, to Mostar. About a 2 hour drive if we hadn't stopped halfway for coffee in this wonderful town called Konjic. That riverside town alone if worth a night just for the atmosphere. I hope I can return and do just that.

Okay, if you want to spend a night in Mostar, let me know and I will suggest a very nice hotel to stay at and one beautiful hotel you should avoid.

Sarajevo is in Bosnia while Mostar is in Herzegovina. The two are separated by mountains. Central European in Bosnia and Mediterranean in Herzegovina. Different worlds. Very hot here, Sarajevo, not so much. Bosnia, unspoiled nature; Herzegovina's dozens of wind generators on hill tops reminds you that the world is encroaching on G-d's perfection.

Arrived in Mostar in time for the Red Bull Cliff Diving competition (from the bridge) so the city is packed. But mostly day trippers and they left between 3 and 4. The Red Bull competition from the Bridge was impressive.

If from Dubrovnik you have a choice between Mostar and Perast/Kotor .... do Perast/Kotor

Day 8 Kravica Waterfalls and Blagaj Dervish house.

Why hire a driver when a bus is a fraction of the cost? For all those small villages, ancient villages, castles, coffees, and lunches along the way. It was a perfect day.

Kravica Waterfalls: plitvice you can see, Kravica, you can see and swim. Bring a swimsuit and spend some time with the locals. For the experience I think, whie not as large as plitvice, the experience is as impactfull.

Blagaj, nice. Interesting. A good lunch stop for a meal on the side of the river.

The falls and the stops in between were the highlights today. Already considering a similar trip that just does the in-between stops for a week.

Back in Sarajevo now. I like the old town, but thanks to my guide a few nights ago, I think next trip i will stay closer to the city center.

The balance here is facinating. Religiously (or lack thereof) the city spans the spectrum from burka to astonishingly revealing all dining in the same restaurants and often walking together and talking. On the subject of BiH nationalism its as common to see Serb and Croatian flags and expressions of identity as it is BiH allegiance. Politically, divisions that represent their former national identity are the rule ... literally as there are 3 rotating presidents. To ensure no side assumes too much power, there is a supreme leader (my term, not theirs). Who is the supreme leader? He is appointed by the EU. He can pretty much veto or prevent implementation of laws or policies that he deems contrary to the constitution (peace treaty). What??? Its not even an EU country! But right now, its working.

I guess I understand why Bosnia isn’t high on people’s lists, but it is such an interesting place, nice people, and gorgeous scenery (not to mention inexpensive). Maybe next time for me would be a return to Sarajevo and Jajce, and first time stays in Konjic and Travnik. And maybe somewhere a little further north that I don’t even know about.

I’m glad you had a good trip!

People go where everyone else goes and then they complain about the crowds, or comment that they wish they had gone 10 years ago before it became so popular. But when you suggest to those same people a place like BiH, they chose not to go because no one goes there.

No Eiffel Tower, no Coliseum. This is one of those places best suited if nature, cultural experiences, very recent history and if people interest you.

Air Serbia to Belgrade was on time. Belgrade to Budapest was nearly 2 hours delayed, so I got home at midnight.

It was a most excellent trip. The biggest takeaway is that if your S.O. has to work and can't go with you, dont let on what a good time you are having or send too many photos. Before I got on my last flight back, I got a message from the S.O. "We are going to the beach next week. I dont care which beach. Arrange it." I haven't got time for the research and planning, so I turned it over to the same trip planner that took care of tge transfers on the Bosnia trip.

Arrive Zadar 14 Sept, depart Zadar 17 September is all i told her. We can do short trips as Ryan Air from Budapest to Zadar is about $50 and an hour.

Nice trip report, Mr E. I had a 3-week trip that got shut down by COVID a few years ago. Your contributions when I asked about this were much appreciated back then. I want to get back to that trip! I did get to spend a few days in BiH with a trip in 2023 -- Sarajevo, Mostar and a few spots along the way. I'm looking forward to a return!

Interesting report although fishing is not my thing. I was to Sarajevo in the 1980s. I still have the beautiful silver coffee pot I bought and, according to my Turkish colleague, paid too much for (I did not even try to bargain).

Hi Beth, the fishing began as an excuse to go to places i otherwise would not have. Sort of a travel theme. Turned out I enjoyed a few days of solitude as well and when I started catching the really quality fish in BiH there was no turning back. Still, its as much about getting off the tourist trail and experiencing unique cultures as anything else.

Mr. E, I hope you've told Dijana about the hotel-tax business at the border so she can warn her other clients.
