I occasionally search through flights thinking if I find an amazing deal I could spontaneously travel to where ever it may be. I was using tripadvisor today and found a pretty good deal (which was actually through expedia) and it involved mixing multiple airlines (delta and airfrance). I'm not actually going to buy the tickets but it made me wonder: Are sites like expedia reliable?
Also, if one of the airlines were to change its flight, what happens to the other leg of the trip? Let me know if you have any wisdom to share. Thanks!
Delta and Air France are partners so it is really no issue to buy a ticket that include both of these airlines. If your first flight was delayed, the airline would put you on the next flight with open seats. Expedia, Orbitz, and Travelocity are all reliable and I have used them a number of times. I still prefer to buy directly from the airline, but there have been times where I have gotten a significantly better price from a site like Expedia so I have bought there. By the way, you could probably buy that ticket that you are looking at directly from Delta or Air France.
It is called code sharing when more than one airline is involved in a routing. It is the same as if it was one airline and the whole trip should be coordinated if one leg is changed. Sometimes on domestic flights with Expedia and others I have had what amount to as two one way trips on non-code sharing flights but have not seen that with international flights.
Like Laura said, Expedia is very reliable. At Expedia, along with Travelocity and Ortbiz you can sometimes package things together, airfare, hotel, rental car and get a good discount it you're going to a single destination, though I've only did this in the US and Canada, never tried to package a trip to Europe since like just about everyone else multiple cities and hotels which these sites probably don't do.
I've always had good luck with expedia although I don't use any one site exclusively.
Thanks! Unfortunately, I typed in the wrong dates without realizing it so the awesome deal isn't quite so anymore. But this information will be helpful for the next deal I hopefully see.
Expedia and such are reliable, however I have qualms about purchasing flights through multiple airlines. For instance, if you are doing Delta and Airfrance is its partner, I would buy the ticket through Delta if it is the same (or close to the same price). And if they wanted me to mix airlines between Delta and American, I wouldn't do it. You don't want to be stuck without arrangements if one of the legs of your trip is delayed. Last year I flew from St. Louis to Rome, going through Chicago and London . Anyways, my leg from ORD to LHR was delayed by 2 or 3 hours, and when I got to London I wasn't sure I was going to make my flight. When I got off the plane in London, an agent found me and told me that if I did not make my flight to Rome, they had already reserved me a seat on the next one, a few hours later. The LHR to FCO flight was British Airways, but run through American so they worked it all out and I didn't have to do a thing (besides run my butt off so I could make my original flight!) If I had been working with two completely separate airlines, I would have been in trouble.
A couple of items to keep in mind: - codes on one airline is better when you have connections - tickets directly from the airline is better when you have travel disruptions
- tickets from consolidators maybe cheaper Edwin
