Flights canceled by airline! and Thanks

I enjoy following this forum and I am frequently amazed by finding answers to a question I was about to ask. A great resource!

I had read about people having flights cancelled or changed by the airline but until yesterday I had not experienced it myself. Three of four legs where cancelled by KLM and the replacement flights they scheduled were unacceptable. Outbound had a 26 minute connection! The return flights cut my last morning in Amsterdam and impacted my ride home. And no seat assignments :-( on the new flights.

Thanks to this forum my panic was short lived. I researched alternative flights (ignoring the cost!) then called KLM. A very long phone call, but they fixed it :-) the only difference is the flights are now Delta-only instead of code-sharing with KLM, which I hope is not significant. The helpful person even reserved seats for me so I got the aisle seats I need to be able to endure the flight.

Thanks to the helpful forum members who have posted about their experience!

One thing I learned is that if you change your email address you must call to have your reservation contact updated. It is not sufficient to update your contact info in your KLM account. I just happened to think about checking my flights thanks to this forum and had not gotten any notice from the airline.

Beth - so glad that it all worked out for you. We flew Delta on our last big trip and had multiple changes. I did the same as you and always looked before I called the Delta rep. They always gave me what I wanted until the very end when the only choices were bad and worse. Bad turned out to not be too bad after all.

Beth, thanks for posting this.

How did you know that your itinerary changed? Did you get an e-mail, or did you happen to check your itinerary and see the changes?

When I buy international tickets, I check my itinerary every two weeks until a month out. Then I check every week. In my experience, the airlines don't always e-mail you when they change your itinerary, which is why I check it often. That method allowed me to see an unacceptable change on my most recent trip to Europe (a 45-minute layer in Chicago), so I called United and they got my sister and me on an earlier flight from St. Louis to Chicago.

I just happened to check, only because of reading stories on this forum. I had never checked before until time to check in for the flights. KLM claims they sent email notiification but I never got it.

Perhaps I will have to keep an eye on it, the trip is just one month from now.

Kudos to you for checking on this. I always look in my Junk Mail folder too. Just in case the airline isn't one that I frequent often.
