Flat iron in carry-on

My wife is hoping to travel with only her carry-on. Is a flat iron and/or curling iron allowed in a carry-on? Thanks for your help.

Matthew - I packed my curling iron in my carry-on bag last week (domestic flight) - no problem.

Thanks, Donna. I'm assuming it wouldn't make a difference if it is an overseas flight. What do you think?

I think it's the same with domestic/international - you just need to get through airport security. I checked the TSA website before I went but didn't see anything (I got caught trying to "smuggle" a snow globe in from France a few years ago - I had no idea it was on the "banned" list). Good point about the dual voltage - most of the new ones are fine. You do need to get one of the plug things so it will fit in the receptacle (check the RS Travel Store).

Thanks, Samuel and Donna. It does have dual voltage and I believe she has a plug adapter as well. Thanks for the reminders, though!

I took a flat iron in my carry-on to Europe in January with no problem. All the exclusions will be on your airline's website.

Absolutely no problem, unless they're handgun-shaped...

Is she wanting to bring a butane-fueled curling iron? THAT'S a diffrent story, perhaps. (used to be OK to bring them - checked only, maybe - if the butane cartridge couldn't be removed, but today I can't find anything definitive on that after much searching...)

And prepare her for the POSSIBILITY that one or the other might either not work as well overseas (ie, get hot enough), OR will (literally) meltdown. And this is assuming they are both dual-voltage. Make sure that neither one needs to be 'set' to 240...most newer models 'read' the voltage and automatically switch themselves, but some older ones need to have a switch/dial turned.

She could buy them there, if necessary ;-)

Many hotels have started advertising hair dryers, but they are hit-&-miss -- some barely produce a whisper (no exaggeration!), so I'm back to bringing my own hair dryer (as small as possible & 1200 watts max - some electrical systems can't handle much more than that...).

Mary, say it isn't so about the hairdryers being lousy. I was hoping to avoid bringing mine.

Matthew, I have taken a dual voltage curling iron to in my carry on with no problems. But...you live in London? Then dual voltage would not be an issue for you. Where are you traveling to?

Yes, Matthew, I forgot to ask you if you live in London...Of course, the dual voltage stuff wouldn't be a concern, but DO remember to bring plug adaptors!

Andrea, MOST of the hair dryers were OK; some blow the daylights out of your hair - no need for a flat iron LOL! Others take a little longer, or maybe they get REALLY HOT and I've had to turn them off for a while. And I only use one for about 4 minutes, so...

And then I've had the 'whisperers'...I always bring barrettes and headbands LOL!

Can anyone recommend a place to buy a reasonably priced flat iron in Paris?

MD, Monoprix would be your best bet. There are many in the city. Google for the one closest to where you will be.
