Mike: Salisbury is a charming English country town, easily reached by train and bus from London. In town is Salisbury Cathedral; just north is Stonehenge; and Stourhead (the landscape garden); and Winchester to the east. You can plan your train trips here: http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/
And general TI type info at this website: www.visitsalisburyuk.com
Post again if you have follow-up questions. You can click around on this website to learn other things that may help. Happy travels!

Hello Mike. A good day trip from Salisbury is to ride in a train to Portsmouth Harbor. There you can walk through the old British navy sailing ship the Victory, and see the Mary Rose ship (made in the 1500s) and the huge iron clad warship there (it contains a military museum). And ride on a ferry boat to the isle of Wight, on that island ride in a train to a town that has a beach. All of that can be done in one day. Or stay one night at the hostel on the isle of Wight, and the next morning ride in a train to the west side of the island to visit the home of Queen Victoria. It was improved in recent years.

Mike: Adding to my list above, see Old Sarum, the original Roman town of Salisbury. Edward Rutherford wrote a good historical novel, "Sarum", that you may enjoy reading. Wilton House is another place to add to the list. And you can get a bus tour to Stonehenge from the Salisbury train station; and there is Avebury further north.

In Oct. 2007 I used the London Plus Pass for train travel in the SouthEast parts of England. Salisbury is included in this pass, along with London, Brighton, Portsmouth, Cambridge, Canterbury, Southern Cotswalds, etc. I suggest you check this out for your travels. I believe it saved me $$, and I liked the flexibility and convenience of having a pass.
