First time to Europe for a 10-day trip

First time to Europe. Family of four with children ages 21 and 18 years old. We arrive in Paris June 22 in the afternoon, take the train to Amsterdam on June 26 in the morning, fly to Munich June 28 at night, then fly home July 2. I am hoping this is a good plan. We love new adventures and food but are not into a lot of museums and art. I've heard the bike tours are fun but any tips or suggestions are appreciated.

Ten days... does that include arrival and departure days?

Either way, that's not a whole lot. With such a short time only, I'd focus on one country. You'll be flying into Paris, so I'd stick with France. There is more than enough to see and do in and around Paris.

going to Amsterdam and other short trips

Not sure what you call a "short trip" - ?

Going to Amsterdam from Paris will cost you pretty much a day no matter which means of transportation you choose, adding packing, getting settled in a new hotel etc. to your pure travel time. Same thing with Munich. Sure you want to take even more time away from your already short vacation?

... not interested so much in a lot of museums and art but like to
experience how other cultures live such as ... seeing interesting
things

So what do you consider "interesting"? Maybe you can be more specific.

If your trip is 10 days , your travel/arrival day and your departure day don’t count, so you have, in effect, 8 days. Flying into Paris and home from Amsterdam would fit nicely into that time frame. Personally. I would spend the whole time in France but I understand the wish on a first trip to Europe to go to more than one country. As for Munich ....... next time, not this time, unless you can add another week to your trip.

I would think in terms of Munich or Amsterdam (Munich would be my choice) and definitely fly into one city and out the other to avoid time wasted backtracking. My rule for train or air around Europe is to try to keep my travel time under four hours. If I can't get under four hours by train, I'll look for a flight.

Paris to Amsterdam costs you 3 hrs on the high-speed Thalys train, which can be as cheap as EUR 35 with advance-bought tickets. Taking an early morning train in Paris, you can be installed in Amsterdam early afternoon. But, you being not so much interested in museums, you can also stay in Haarlem (15 mins away) or Leiden (35 mins). Both are nice historical cities, and will give you more a local feel than over-touristy Amsterdam.

If you go to Amsterdam, your kids should enjoy a trip to the Heineken Brewery and the Amsterdam Zoo--espec. if you can time it when they feed the seals and they do tricks. Also try the rich mini-pancakes called "Poffertjes".

I’d do only two cities, 4 nights in each. 3 cities is possible if you have 10 full days not counting travel days, but your cities are too far apart, I feel on a short trip like this too much time is wasted getting from point to point, and I am one who likes to cram a bunch into a trip.
I highly recommend BIke about Tours for a fun trip to Versailles, so far I have recommended to 3 people and they all felt in was a highlight of their trip! Have fun!

With ten days do an open jaw ticket -- into one city and home from another. Probably will be cheaper and will save at least a day's travel. Look at a map. Paris, Munich, and Amsterdam do not line up well. Personally would save Munich for another trip - perhaps a Christmas market trip. If you want another city look to Bruges, Antwerp, or Brussels on the way to Amsterdam. Into Paris and home from Amsterdam. And you will be hitting peak tourist time so things will run a little slower.

Hi, I agree with the others.

Take the high speed train from Paris to Amsterdam (book in advance for cheaper tickets)

You could stay in Haarlem - it might be less expensive and you can more easily do side trip to the beach or Zuid Kennemerland National Park. Amsterdam gets a bit crazy in the summer but if you are not into museums at least you wont have to deal with those crowds. Since your kids are adults they will probably like exploring the city on their own - it's quite safe as long as they don't do anything dumb haha. Take the (free) ferry to Amsterdam Noord. Check out a food festival or other festival if there are any on while you are visiting. Depending on the weather you could also rent bikes and ride to Waterland or Oudekerk aan de Amstel for a day adventure.

You can take the train to Munich from Amsterdam or hop on a flight from Schiphol.

And I also agree a bike ride at Versailles plus a picnic is a great idea. A nice break from Paris on a sunny day. You could even skip the inside of the palace if you really hate museums.

Paris and Amsterdam would be a great first trip. I might switch it around because Amsterdam is easier to adjust to when jet lagged, everyone speaks English.

It sounds like a wonderful time of making memories for your family! I would consider having each one make a list of the top 3 experiences that each wants to have on the trip. This can really help focus your planning on what is important to your particular group. I find that this type of focus makes for memorable trips, especially when time is limited.
