First time Scandinavia

Hi, we have never been to the Scandinavia and would like to do a one week there this July before heading to Portugal. It will be our first time. Just starting to plan. Is there a city we should fly into from San Francisco or any must see city? Thanks.

When I saw your question, I assumed you were a newcomer to this forum. But in your profile I see you've posted over 500 times. There are many delightful places worth visiting in Scandinavia, but given the information you've provided about what you're interested in (i.e. none at all), I can't begin to predict what you would enjoy most.

I suggest you pick up a guidebook and read about possible destinations and see which sound like a good fit for you. With a week, you could do one city with some nice excursions, or two cities with less time available for day trips, or something like Norway in a Nutshell between Oslo and Bergen with a stopover in between.

Yes I will look into Scandinavia and read up on it first.

Rick's Scandinavia book does a good job of detailing some highlights (he has only very partial coverage of each country), and does a great job of finding discounts and deals in this potentially very expensive region.

His videos are here (scroll down and click Scandinavia to see all his videos about it): https://www.ricksteves.com/watch-read-listen/video/tv-show

In one week, you will have to be brutally selective, and you should also investigate connections if you're planning to go to more than one place. My favorite two places from a 2003 trip there were Stockholm and Bergen, but I was last in Copenhagen in 1991, so it's hard to compare.

By the way, if money is an issue, you'll find that Denmark is cheaper than Sweden and Sweden is MUCH cheaper than Norway; prices in Norway can be real jaw-droppers.

Thanks a lot Harold and Laura for your response and advice. I was in a rush when I posted the question during my break at work. I have done readings on Portugal, my final destination but have done no readings at all in Scandinavia. I was just hoping to get some idea and then read up over the weekend. Thanks also Harold for mentioning the logistic issues between the 3 countries. I know it is expensive but was not aware of Norway being the most expensive. Have always heard about NIN but I need to read up on it. Thanks.

One thing I have learned visiting Scandinavia is that distances and travel times between some of the most popular destinations are much greater than in other parts of Europe. With only a week, I would look at perhaps no more than two cities, or maybe one city and one smaller destination. I would not try to hit any kind of a regional summary.

I like Norway the best and Oslo is one of my favorite cities, but as others have noted, the country is extremely expensive. And as wonderful as the scenery might be, as of my last visit, Norway had yet to experience the culinary revolution that lifted Sweden and Denmark from European also-rands to the most exciting food destinations on the continent.

Of the capital cities, I found Copenhagen the easiest to explore on foot, Stockholm the most grand, and Oslo the most delightfully green.

Thanks a lot Tom for the overview and the description of the 3 cities/ countries. It helps to start our planning. We would most likely just do one city and one smaller destination as you mentioned.
