First Europe Trip Itinerary Help

Hi everyone! This is my first trip to Europe from the U.S. We are going to attend a good friend’s wedding in Lake Como, Italy. We are arriving in Munich, Germany on a Friday morning and attending Oktoberfest that weekend. We will depart Munich on Sunday. This is the part I need help with! Our next reservation is in Lake Como on Tuesday, but we can arrive Wednesday morning if needed. We need to figure out what to do between Munich on Sunday and Lake Como on Tuesday or Wednesday. Although it would be amazing to fit in somewhere like Prague or Rome, I'm thinking we won’t have enough time with travel time to include one of those stops. I have been looking at Venice, Italy; Lucerne, Switzerland; or Salzburg, Austria. I am open to any other spots as well, but am mainly concerned with transportation and how to get everywhere. If anyone knows of a good jewel that can’t be missed that is on that route, let me know. Because it is our first time, I would like to be able to go somewhere that is worth it. I love all things old and beautiful and good food and drink. I’m not looking for modern, or shopping for high fashion items.

I like the Munich to Lucerne to Como all by train
And once you decide than you may what to do some day trips or mountain excursions
Mount Titlis as a day excursion from Luzerne.

I hope you already have your hotel reservations for Munich. During the fest, everything is booked, even cities 50 miles from Munich.

With only one day to stop anywhere, I would stick to something close to Lake Como.

Lucerne is great. Stopping in Salzburg might not be the most direct route.

I assume you are traveling by rail.

@geovagriffith-

-Yes, we have everything booked except for this in between stop. We are staying right where the action is in Munich, but paying the price as we probably should have booked much earlier than we did.

-This is our first trip, so open to whatever the best transport options are. I had considered Venice or Prague for this in between time with the thoughts that we would fly. I started planning this trip with HUGE aspirations of what we could accomplish in our time frame and have scaled it back considerably to allow for transportation.
- We have friends that are a couple that will be going to Venice during this time but will fly from Munich, then take the train to Lake Como.
- We don't technically need to be in Lake Como until Wednesday, but we went ahead and booked our place from Tuesday just in case we needed it.

  • Thanks for the itinerary! I'll take a look at that tonight.
  • We are Headed to Milan for a few days after Lake Como and will fly home from there, but think from many locations you have to take the train to Milan first, then to Lake Como.

Ok then, include a day visiting Padova.

Sunday
From Munich it's 5.5 hours via Innsbruck and the Brenner Pass, over the Alps to Verona (3 nights)

Monday
Explore Verona, city of Romeo & Juliet.

Tuesday
Checkout nearby Padova. Make sure you book for the wonderful Scrovegni Chapel.

Wednesday
Early train (1hr 13min) to Milan, then on to Lake Como

With David's itinerary, you could also substitute a day trip to Venice (instead of Padova) from Verona if you found more in Venice than that suited your interests. I think Venice really deserves a few days, but you would get a taste of it at least. We did the reverse, visted Verona from a base in Venice and the trip is about 1.5 hours by train. Going to Venice would be a busier day, going to Padova may be a little less rushed so all depends on your interests and desires.
