Finally on our way! And a thank you

After lots of ups and downs while planning this trip, we are on our way to London! We have been planning this 3 week adventure to the UK and Ireland with my mom for more than a year. She has always talked about her love of England, Scotland, and Ireland, but she didn't ever expect to go. I knew she would love it, so we talked her into joining us this year. This is her first trip overseas.

Our planning took a bit of a curve when she was told she needed open heart surgery to remove a cardiac tumor 1 month before we were supposed to leave. The extensive recovery required meant that we would not be able to continue with our original plans. Undeterred, I hurried to reschedule everything for later in the summer, hoping she would feel well enough to travel then. I normally like to travel in the less busy seasons, so we were a little bit concerned about traveling in July. It may be busier when we get there, but we are looking forward to some of the benefits like getting to visit the Buckingham palace state rooms, Highclere castle, and attending the military tattoo in Edinburgh. The downside of the changes to our plans is that everything was significantly more expensive during the high season. Also, since we were booking with less notice than before, we had difficulty finding a triple room in many places, so our hotel costs almost doubled.

We are so thankful that mom is OK and able to travel with us, we are viewing this once-in-a-lifetime trip as a celebration for her. We are making more splurges than we usually would, like spending extra money to get great seats to the Phantom of the Opera in London, and to the military tattoo. Instead of staying in the more budget places that we normally stay in, we are spending a little more to get charming places or places with unique history to stay in. Our biggest splurge is going to be a night spent in Ashford castle in Ireland, where we will also have afternoon tea then do the hawk walk.

We are especially grateful to Delta this trip. We had booked our original flights 9 months before we planned to travel. I was not aware that a ticket expires one year after purchase. I was prepared to pay the change fee per ticket, but when I called to reschedule our flights I was told that our tickets would expire just the week before we planned to travel. I was so disappointed, and told the customer service person why we had to make the change to our plans. She was reluctant, but said that she would attempt to make the changes and see if the computer would allow it. Not only was she allowed to reschedule, but in light of the circumstances she waived the change fees and wished my mom a happy recovery. I learned my lesson about not booking flights too far in advance going forward, but I'm thankful the lesson wasn't as painful as it could have been.

Mom isn't a hiker, and she still tires out more easily than before, so we have planned a lot of time in the car with scenic stops along the way. She loves road trips and is excited about this. We are certainly trying to cover too much in too little time, but hopefully we will be able to give her a little taste of each place since it is doubtful that she will ever be back. Thank you all for the tips you have offered as I've planned this trip. I will be sure to report back when we return!

What a wonderful trip for your mom. I say splurge away. My mother always wanted to go to Croatia. By the time we planned to go, she got cancer and we never made it. Someone said, you can always make more money, but not more time. Enjoy every minute.

Enjoy the time with your mom. And don’t worry about the splurges and the necessary changes in your plans. The weight of the memories you are creating will vastly outweigh the costs.

Have a wonderful time, and bless you for what you are doing. My mother has wanted to return to England for many years, but kept putting it off. Now her health and general physical condition have ruled out any kind of travel; even a trip out for a meal is a major ordeal.

So have a wonderful time, and tell Mom: "Keep on traveling!"

Thank you all for your sweet well wishes! We will have the best time, and it is fun to see mom's excitement. She is even looking forward to her flight "across the pond!"

Paul - I am glad it is useful information. It had never occurred to me that there was an expiration, so I will definitely be cautious about how early I buy tickets going forward!

Great story, and great Delta service! They have been very accommodating to me in the past when my son got sick and we had to abandon a vacation and come home on day 3. Have a wonderful time with your mom!

hey hey Tamara
how fabulous for you and your mom, plus your husband being a saint. wish my mom was still here to do something like this. we use to fly interisland in Hawaii to see family and friends, it was fun.
I know it’s kinda late, here’s a couple things: aladyinlondon.com (a blog of London things to do)
walks.com (maybe a Beatles magical mystery walk😃)
streetsensations.com (list of street markets)
jasons.co.uk (a relaxing boat ride down a canal)
we did a gin tour, so much fun, even had a “chauffeur”
Piccadilly Circus is a fun and crowded plaza with “free” entertainment
stop in a pub for a pint
enjoy this trip of a lifetime for mom, memories will mean more than anything for all of you. my motto “will eat rice and beans” after vacation. worth every penny, nickel, and dime. leaving on my trip to Paris middle September.
can’t wait to read your trip report when you return. ENJOY

Tamara,
So happy to read your post! This will be a precious trip for all of you with special memories.

A dear friend of mine died this week unexpectedly and suddenly in the middle of the night. A reminder to carpe diem or seize the day because we are not guaranteed tomorrow!
Keep on traveling!
I look forward to hearing about your adventures!

Thank you all for sharing in my excitement! Judy, I am so very sorry to hear about your loss. I work as an ICU nurse and the tragedies I have seen have definitely impacted my carpe diem mentality. We never know how much time we are given. What a terrible loss of your friend.

Tamara,
Thank you for your condolences. I really appreciate it!

I’m struck by the attitude of a few friends of mine who want to travel but procrastinate about taking the plunge. Oh well, each to his own! I am going now as much as time/money will allow.

I know your trip will be amazing.

It brought a smile to my face when I got to the part of your post that said you were able to reschedule your trip!
My Mom was one of those people that you had to tie her up and drag her on an airplane. She was petrified of flying. Dad had always wanted to go to Paris and Rome. He flew over both in WWII but wanted to be on the ground. After Mom died my sister and I went to Paris and Rome with Dad. It was a hoot! (We are French heritage) and he used his Cajun French to communicate and the French people loved it and were so Friendly.

Have a Great Time and Take Plenty of Pictures! You and your family, Mom included, will love looking at them for years to come!

Tamara,

Great news! Happy travels to your Mom and Family! I think it is wonderful you made the decision to splurge up a little - sometimes you just need to :) - experiences can be "priceless."

Wishing you precious memories!

Oops, lol, did not realize the thread was bumped up. goes to have more coffee

So, to the above, my sentiments are in the "past" tense - lol!
