Favourite Festivals / Events?

Hello All,
Planning for an long Europe Trip can be daunting as you never want to miss out on an exciting event. My partner and I (25 yo) are planning a 6 month trip in 2017 between June/July and December. We aren't into music or dance too much, but are already planning on going to Oktoberfest, some Christmas Markets and Highland Games. I hear there is a chocolate festival in the Germany area?

My question is: What are your favourite festivals to attend or do you know of some which may be interesting to us?

Feast of St. James in Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain. Celebration goes on for the week leading up to the saint's day on July 25. You must see Los Fuegos del Apóstol on the night of July 24 when the entire facade of the cathedral is lit up with fireworks. Lots of pilgrims in town. Very colourful Galician singing and dancing. Galician food is delicious. A great festival.

The Festivals in Edinburgh are not just music and dance. There are lots of plays and comedians as well particularly in the Fringe Festival. Here's a link to all the festivals in Edinburgh. August is the big month, but there are so many others. VIsitScotland has a search engine for them. There is one for Samhaim!

What you might want to do is figure out the places you are thinking of going to and then seeing what's happening in those towns and the surrounding area.

The chocolate fest is in Tübingen. http://www.stuttgart-tourist.de/en/search-book/e-chocolart

One of my favorite festivals would be the Museums Riverbank Fest in Frankfurt, held the last weekend in Aug. With 22 stages, 600 stands selling a huge variety of hand made items, artwork, as well as food and drink especially of the ethnic variety, dragon boat races all 3 days, fireworks on the last night and for 7 euro you get in all of the museums (around 30 of them) for the entire weekend.

For something completely different, you might want to go to Frankensteins' Castle near Darmstadt for their Halloween festivities. http://www.frankenstein-halloween.de/content/e566/index_en.html

Rhine Aflame is cool, as is the "burning of the castle" in Heidelberg. There are more medieval festivals than you could possibly visit in a year.

Venice Art Biannale. Now I know this isn't a festival per say, but it is the Olympics of the art world and happens every two years and is simply incredible.

Sarajevo Film Festival: Started during the conflict in the 90s and kept going. Really fun to see movies and film from all over the world. I saw pride and prejudice in their open air theatre and the next day walked the red carpet with for $5 to attend the premiere of a Slovenian film.

Sziget: Now I know you said you aren't into music but this festival is one of the best in the world. If you get tired of the huge range of music you can always go see circus of Sziget (no animals) or enjoy all the amazing kinds of food they have.

Looking forward to hearing other ideas.

Saz (?)

I hope you both have a festival-atious trip and get great memories.

I don't know what the political map of Europe will look like in 2 years, but I wanted to caution you to be sure you have all your visas in place well before departure.

If you plan on visiting using the provisions of the Schengen agreement you are reminded that the maximum time you can be in the Schengen area is 90 days in any 180, and your trip is around 180.

That 90 day limit is aggregated across all the member countries, not 90 in each one.

Not a huge fan of Munich's Oktoberfest. It's become too much of a gathering for the international fratboy-type. I much more enjoyed the various regional harvest fests (Oktoberfest is mostly just a Munich institution), like Stuttgart's Cannstatter Volksfest or Bad Dürkheim's Würstmarkt.

I really enjoyed the annual weeklong Hessentag festival, but it takes place in a different town in the state of Hessen every year. Looks like the host will be Bad Hersfeld in 2017. Nice town.

Another good one was Regensburg's Bürgerfest. This was one of the best I've encountered for food. The music was also really good- you've never truly heard the Rolling Stones' music until you hear it performed with traditional Bavarian instruments.

Speaking of Bavaria and music... I know you said you aren't into music fests, but a really good one is the Coburg International Samba Festival. The entire Alstadt of this former duccal capital comes alive with the sound of drumming. Even if you don't want to pay money to watch the main event, there's still more than enough music, beer and food throughout the city to satisfy anyone.

Christmas Markets are an obvious recommendation.

I would suggest adding a "Rhine in Flames" fireworks display to your "must see" list. I just posted the following reponse to another question. Be aware that there's also a Rhine in Flames on August 8 in Koblenz (check the link that I inserted at the end) if the timing of that would work better:

Last fall we scheduled a few days on the Rhine specifically to see a Rhine in Flames fireworks display, and it was a highlight of our trip.

For fall of 2015, you could see one on September 12 (Oberwesel) or September 19 (St. Goar-St. Goarshausen). You can watch them from the riverbanks, along with hundreds (thousands?) of other people, which is what we did. It would be fun to book a hotel or B&B along the river and watch from your own balcony, but hotels may already all be booked by now. Or you can book a river boat, and sail down the Rhine right in the midst of the display, which sounds amazing. The hotel or riverboat option would be especially good if it rains that evening (which it did for us in St. Goar). But I have to admit, it really added to whole experience to be amongst the crowds.

The fireworks lasted over an hour. There were four separate displays, starting with Rheinfels Castle "catching fire" ... then fireworks from behind the castle, then from a barge in the river right in front of us, then from somewhere to our left, and then again from the river. The most spectacular fireworks we have ever had the privilege to see!

Here's a website with info on the 2015 Rhine in Flames displays and river boats.
