Favorite trips with teens?

Looking for ideas for a June trip for a family of 4 (2 teens). What have been your most memorable trips?

We like a mix of city and outdoors, but don’t like crowds or heat (high 80s is getting too hot). We enjoy history, museums (less so art museums), archeological sites, unique cultural experiences, good food, off the beaten path towns, moderate hiking and other outdoor adventures.

In Europe we’ve been to Paris, London, English countryside, Bavaria, Austria, Ireland.
Looking to hit 1-2 new countries this June for about 8-10days, but want to leave enough space to slow down a bit. Starting in a major hub is nice, but would consider open-jaw flights.

Would love recommendations for areas to consider, relaxing places to stay off the beaten path that would still offer activities. Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

A2mom,
Last year we spent 10 days in June in the Dordogne region, hubby and I, son and his significant other, daughter and her 9 and 12 year old children. We rented a 4 bedroom, 3 bath house. Rented cars (needed 2 for 7 people) and had a wonderful time, with varied experiences. See my trip report "Just Returned from Four Weeks in France...continued" posted last summer. It describes what we all did for 10 days.....we kayaked on the Dordogne, visited two prehistoric caves, toured two castles that were important in the Hundred Years War, watched trebuchet demonstrations, went to town markets, visited chocolate -making shops, kicked back in the green rural area, and ate LOTS of great food. The kids loved it, even checking out the groceries in the stores to compare to what we have here.

Very relaxed and not rushed. We rented our house from gites-de-france (way better than AirBandB or VRBO in my opinion). Our place had a pool for cooling off at the end of the day, plus we were able to have breakfast there, and often dinner. The Dordogne region is perfect for varied things to see and do, yet relax and not rush around, and entertain all ages.

I hope you find the perfect place for your vacation. Bonne chance!

P.S. You could fly into Paris and take a TGV to Bordeaux where you could rent a car for the (about) 3 hour drive to the Dordogne area. Or you could book a flight to Bordeaux from the US, changing planes at CDG. It depends on when your flights woould be. Trains to the Dordogne are a bit more problematic. And I wouldn't try to see 2 countries in this one trip. (But I am partial to France, and the Dordogne also.)

I would expect the Dordogne to threaten the high 80s Fahrenheit fairly regularly in June. Belgium, Netherlands and Denmark would suit the bill. Scotland perhaps even more so, especially the Highlands. Lots of history, great cultural diversity and terrific food.

Slovenia + your choice of neighboring country. Lake Bled, hiking, summer luge, cable car, Ljubljana castle & awesome riverside, Postojna cave complex

Croatia adds - Julian Alps, Roman sites, WW1 history, Plitvice NP, Rovijn & Pula
Switzerland adds - Swiss Alps, Zurich Airport connections,
Italy (Friuli Venezia Giulia) adds - Venice airport, lots of small towns & backdoors

Thank you for the suggestions! A note on the heat, in a more rural area with access to some relief/water high 80s could be ok, I’m trying to avoid fighting crowds plus high heat (ie- would love Italy but probably not that time of year). :)

We lived overseas and took our teens with us all over Europe.
Treat your teens like adults and expose them to historical place, art and scenic places.

Italy is wonderful and has much to offer. If you are worried about heat (early June is not that bad in Italy), then go to Switzerland and northern Italy.

Just to clarify - That corner of Northeast Italy is actually really nice and cool weather-wise in June. Overnight lows in the low 60s, daytime highs in the 70s

That's a tough one (the weather aspect)!
I'd look at northern Spain, Scotland, Iceland (last one might be less great on the food end)--those all maximize time being closer.

A2mom,
Last year, mid-June our weather was in the 70's most days. Of course, weather is weather, no guarantees.

I’ll second the Norway recommendation. Rubber boat fjord safari and swimming in the fjord might entertain the teens.
