Favorite Travel Apps for Iphone/Ipod Touch

Since Iphones and Ipod Touches are becoming so popular, how about people sharing their favorite travel apps as well as ones you found to be less than useful.

True, but there are very few responses. I'm sure the people on the helpline can come up with a bigger list.

I'm currently on vacation in Hawaii and I'm using the following (in addition to preloaded apps like Camera and Voice Memos and Maps)...

DocumentsToGo: Great iPhone word processor for keeping a trip diary.

iHeartRadio: As in "I love radio". This app lets you listen to any of a hundred or more online radio stations. Makes a great travel companion to keep up with news from home, or favorite music stations or whatever.

Wapedia: handy iPhone-friendly encyclopedia.

myWireless: free AT&T app that lets you monitor your phone/data usage.

SitOrSquat: this app uses the GPS function to tell you the nearest public facilities to your current position.

Thanks Ken. I too have the new 3rd Generation Ipod Touch with 32 GB. (I don't have to worry about data charges.)

It's going to make travel a lot easier and lighter.

My favourite four:

Flight Update ($4.99) - Keep track and receive updates on all your flights. Get up to date information of your gate number, baggage claims, delays/cancellations, departure/arrival times/terminal, aircraft info before even stepping foot in the airport or when waiting to deplane for your connection. Supports numerous airlines, such as the major and budget carriers (EasyJet, RyanAir etc).

White Noise Lite (Free) - Ambient sounds to help you relax or sleep. Quite handy when you need to get some much needed rest while in transit plane/train/bus. There is a paid version ($1.99) which offers more sounds.

MetrO (Free) - finds the best public transportation route from your current location to your tourist destination (ie. Sheraton Hotel to Prado Museum). Currently supports over 400 cities.

DocsToGo ($4.99) - view/edit MS Office files, view pdf files. I have all my travel info/itinerary/schedules in excel, word or pdf files.

Frank II,

I also think it's a good idea to have a Thread here on this topic. I find the Graffiti Wall to be a bit difficult to wade through at times, so would be more inclined to look here.

I've downloaded a number of optional App's for my IPod Touch, both for travel and "everyday" use. Here's the list so far:

fX Change (Currency Converter) - a good application for keeping track of currency rates. I've configured it for the currencies that I'd be dealing with most often (Cdn$ to US$ / Euros / Swiss Fr / Poland / Czech / etc.).

Weather - I believe this is one of the standard App's, but I have it configured to display weather at home, as well as London, Paris, Rome, Athens and Honolulu (places I might travel to).

London Tube

Paris Metro

Flight Update (Silverware Software) - I just downloaded this a few days ago, so haven't used it to any extent yet. I entered details for a future flight and it seemed to retrieve the details quite well. Will have to report back a bit later when I've more experience with this App.

MathURPN - I used this App on my Palm PDA as well, so had to have it on the IPod Touch. I'm a big fan of RPN Calculators and prefer those over anything else.

Wordroll Italian, French & German - I find these App's are good for reference when looking for a particular word, especially as they translate either way.

RS Orsay Tour - I downloaded this when it was free, but will probably buy others in future.

Dial Codes - this provides phone dialing information for a large number of countries. I haven't used it to any extent yet, so not sure how well it works in actuality.

That's the list so far, but I'm sure there will be more App's in future. To those considering purchase of an IPod Touch, I'd highly recommend getting the 32GB model, as it provides lots of room not only for App's but also movies (which use lots of memory) and music.

Cheers!

Frank II,

I think my IPod Touch is an "earlier generation", but I'm not sure if it's Generation 1 or 2? I wonder if there's a way to tell? I've updated the software several times, so it uses the current IPod / IPhone software version.

At the time I bought my IPod, the maximum memory capacity was 16GB, so that's the model I'm using. I still have 10-12 GB remaining, so still lots of room for more App's.

One App that I'm seriously considering in the near future is Docs To Go. I also have that on my Palm PDA and it's an excellent product. It appears that Palm isn't manufacturing PDA's any longer (and possibly won't be supporting them much longer?), so I suppose it would probably be a good idea to start transferring as many files as possible over to the IPod.

One App that's essential for me is Pocket Quicken and since this isn't available on the IPod, I'll probably have to continue carrying the Palm PDA for the foreseeable future. So far it has worked flawlessly and easily synchronizes data between the Palm and the Desktop.

Cheers!

I upgraded to the Itouch from a Palm TX...still good but outdated with today's technology. (I think Palm is on its way out.)

I also bought the Fueltank Uno today and I'm charging it. It is so small and comes with a small drawstring cloth bag big enough to hold the Fueltank, Chargepod, power cord, and device adaptors.

I've also decided to leave the Kindle at home as the Kindle on the Itouch works fine for me (especially since I can make the font bigger which my old eyes appreciate.)

Just checked the app store and there is a Quicken Online Mobile that works with Quicken online. I don't know if that will work for you. (And it's free.)

Frank II,

Thanks for the info on the Quicken Mobile. I'll have a look at it. I couldn't find anything related to Quicken in the App Store?

I'm not sure where Palm is heading these days. They seem to have completely phased-out PDA's but still manufacturing the PRE so maybe they'll continue to offer Smartphones? Unfortunately, I'm not sure what kind of a "business strategy" they're following, as so far the PRE is only available on CDMA networks, which are also "going the way of the dinosaur" very shortly. Doesn't seem like a smart move to exclude 85% of the mobile market, IMHO. I'll continue to use my Tungsten T3 as long as it still functions.

Steve,

Thanks for the info on Quicken. I'll check it out straight away! I must have a Gen. 1 IPod as well, as it's bright chrome on the back (I have it in a rubber case, so had to remove that to check). It is a 16 GB model though.

Cheers!

Steve: "As for Docs to Go, I found a better free app called "My Drop Box." You have a folder on your desktop you can drag files to, it goes to the cloud where your iPhone can pull up the file and read it from many formats like Word, Excel, PDF and text. No editing, though."

Of course Docs To Go works the same way. Drag it to the folder and you've got it when you travel. But "it goes to the cloud"? Fine if you're in the USA where data doesn't count for anything. Abroad I'd much prefer DocumentsToGo (DocsToGo). All your data is with you all the time, no data usage required, and you can edit it.

I always activate a data plan when abroad so I can use iPhone data services with no fear of exorbitant charges. But I sure don't want a word processor using those precious data megabytes if I don't have to.

My Drop Box may be OK for free, but calling it a better app than Documents To Go is, well, specious.

I looked into a good map app and the best one I found was OffMaps. This is a great tool for being able to use an iphone/itouch when not on wifi/3G networks. It does use open source maps as opposed to Google Maps but it should do the job just fine.

Michael, can you clarify something for me. Can the iPhone/Touch get your GPS position without a data connection? Like in airplane mode can it still pinpoint your location on the OffMaps screen?

Sorry for the vagueness of my previous post. You first must cache maps of your choice while you have access to wifi/3G (150mb limit per download). Then you may go into airplane mode and still access your cached maps. If you have an iPhone then yes GPS does work too. I tested the software tonight in my hometown by taking my SIM card out, then turning off wifi. I was able to zoom into my hometown (since I cached it) and saw the blue dot on my location. This is going to be a great tool for trying to get back to my hotel after a long day of walking around.
