Favorite Lake

I was looking through Trafalgar Tours 2016 book earlier because it gives me a hint for planning where I want to visit next. The pictures captivate my imagination. I saw many scenic pictures and reminded me of past visits so it prompts me to ask the question: WHAT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL LAKE YOU HAVE VISITED IN EUROPE? I will start. Lake Lucerne. Breathtaking beauty!!!

steve,

It's difficult to pick just one lake, as there are so many beautiful lakes in Europe. One that comes to mind is Hallstätter See, and another is Lake Maggiore in Locarno but Lake Lucerne is definitely on the list too.

I haven't done some of the most beloved lake vacations (such as Como or Hallstatt or the Lake District), but of the lakes I have visited, Lake Bled in Slovenia has to be my #1.

This list includes Plivtice Lakes, which was out-of-this-world beautiful, but I don't think it belongs in the same category as the other lakes, because it's within a national park and because its beauty is as much about the individual waterfalls and cascades than the lakes themselves.

We spent 2 days in Malcesine in Oct 2016. I found the vistas on that end of Lake Garda mesmerizing. Walking and running along the waterfront pathways was like being in a fairy tale. The view from Mount Baldo is stunning and lots of opportunity for hiking. We want to go back someday and spend a week exploring more of that area hiking and cycling.

There are so many beautiful lakes in Europe especially those in the mountains. It is difficult if not impossible to say which one is the most beautiful. I will just say one of the most beautiful is Morskie Oko (Sea Eye) of Tatra Mountains in Poland located right under the highest mountain of Poland - Rysy.

Poland is on my bucket list. I must see it! I agree with the Italian lakes. I visited Como in 1984. So many places to see not enough time and money lol.

So far my favorite lake in northern Italy has been Lake Maggori and we've spent time at several of the larger lakes. In Austria it has been the one at Hallstatt. In England it is Windermere. This summer we're spending 3 weeks at Bodensee/ Lake Constance in Germany. I'm hoping to have a new favorite. I think even one per country is hard to choose.

I never met a lake I didn't like so I could never pick a favorite. Some are prettier because of their breathtaking scenery, some are bigger and have boats that take to you to villages around the lake, some are just peaceful and pastoral, some have beaches jammed with people on a nice day all having a great time. They are all great places to visit. I try to get some 'lake time' on every one of my trips.

Not so much a lake as a tarn. Angle Tarn in the English Lake District is a most memorable tarn partly because we walked by it as clouds and mist thickened and partly because it marked the end our our time in the Lake District and we crossed Kidsty Pike in a white out traveling by compass bearing.

Alfred Wainwright says that Angle Tarn "ranks amongst the best of Lakeland tarns" with its "indented shore and islets". It is, he says "the crowning glory of the (Angletarn) Pikes" that over-look the tarn that gave them their name.
It is the most beautiful place and you get your first view of it virtually by surprise and this adds to the 'wow' factor. There's often a chance to see red deer here and just possibly a peregrine falcon.
The tarn itself lies on a broad ridge below the Pikes. The area offers massive 360 degree mountain views of the Helvellyn range to the west and the High Street range to the east. You'll feel completely surrounded by mountains in this beautiful wild terrain!

Steve, I'm sorry but I have to go off topic here slightly. For me personally, my favourite lake which literally took my breath away was Moraine Lake in B.C. Canada. Closely followed by Dove Lake in Cradle Mountain, Tasmania. In Europe Lake Lugano.

The Bodensee for me. From certain angles, it looks large enought to be an ocean, and on a clear day, the Alps loom above the horizon. Many of the towns along the lakeshore are beautiful. The generally mild temperatures mean that it's usually warm enough to swim for most of the summer.

I've only seen it driving by Montreux, but the view of Lake Geneva blew me away.

Como lake, Italy: Bellagio, Varenna, the beautiful villages on the coast, the villas, Piona Abbey, the beaches, Vezio castle, the sacred mountain, Comacina island, the funicular, Como cathedral + icecream and pizza
Just drive around the lake and follow the brown (things to see) road signs ... You won' have enough time..

I think Plitvice Lakes has to be my favourite. If I were to not think about the waterfalls and just the lakes the colour of them alone, for me that makes them so stunningly remarkable. I was so happy to watch the fish just hanging out. Next fave: Lake Bled. That being said, I haven't been to many lakes in Europe-because there is such stunning ones so close to my home, I don't feel the need to necessarily go when I'm across the Atlantic.

I still have many lakes to visit, but I too will say Lake Bled in Slovenia. Absolutely beautiful!

The fact that I can't even answer this question tells me that I need to plan more lake time for my next European vacation. The Salzburg lakes district and the eerily bleak Kleifarvatn in Iceland are the only ones I can even recall visiting. I obviously favour the sea - I'll blame that on living in a land-locked province.

I'll have to keep track of everyone's favourites!

The few I've seen don't compare well to Crater Lake, Lake Maligne, Lake Louise.
