Favorite Gelato Places in Europe

So I got to thinking about gelato as I replied to a different post and wondered if there was a topic on recommended gelato places. I did a search and found almost all were either a) many years old and/or b) on the Italy forum. Since gelato has expanded well beyond the Italian borders, I thought we could use a new place to add our favorite gelato places in all of Europe. I realize this is very subjective and what one person liked might not have been a good experience for another, but there may be places where several give a thumbs up (which means it gets added to my list when in that city).

After a butt-busting flight across the Atlantic from PHL to LIS, there is (hopefully still) a gelato stand in the terminal right before you exit. A double cup of chocolate and stracciatella was a great way to start the trip (and the first picture I took on that trip) ... now let's hear your favorites!

I suspect I first read about it on this forum, but I can now also recommend in Spain:

Los Italianos, Calle Gran Vía de Colón 4, Granada. You tell the cashier what size you want, pay and are handed a token. You turn the token in to the scooper when you specify your flavor(s). There was always a bit of line when I stopped by in early May 2019, but it wasn't a long line, and it moved rapidly.

The fantastic Gelateria La Romana has a shop in Vienna at Stiftgasse 15-17. The absolute best.

But my favorite ice cream in Europe is the vanilla soft serve with licorice jimmies from Hansens in Tisvildeleje, Denmark.

But to the OP, aptly named DQ, I’ll take a Butterfinger Blizzard any day over gelato.

@acraven ... google mapped it and it is about a 2 minute walk from where we are staying ... I would have probably seen it and stopped anyway, but it is now on the list, either before or after (or both?) the Cathedral and Royal Chapel visit ... thanks for the thumbs up!

@Emily ... contrary to my initials, I am not a super big fan of the blizzard, I'll take a Braums milkshake (it's a Texas thing)

In Logroño we have "dellaSera" Ice Cream Shop. Fernando Sáenz Duarte is the ice cream maker and he has won several awards for his ice creams. He also works with different chefs (some Michelin star holders) to create "cold cuisine". It is usually ranked in the top ice cream shops in Spain.

My favorite flavor is roasted pineapple.

Gelateria Da Roberto in Nafplio was great--run by an Italian, as I suspect many of the greats in other countries will be!

Gelateria Da Roberto in Nafplio?

Are you sure you don't mean Antica Gelateria di Roma? He's the Italian guy.

Compared to him, Gelateria da Roberta was tasteless.

I ate at both this past week and it was like night and day.

Gelateria Dondoli in San Gimignano was really good! I ate a lot of gelato in Italy and liked this one the best!

Amorino makes the best gelato i’ve ever had, they’re in France, Italy and other European countries. There’s one in San Francisco, NYC, and possibly other US cities.

@DQ - I grew up on the Texas/Louisiana border. Also lived in the DFW for a while. I know Braums.

Nope, I had the opposite experience!

I wouldn't call it high brow, but Gelateria Della Palma by the pantheon in Rome was delightful. They had a Raffaello flavor that completely captured the Ferrero candy by the same name. They also had a crispy pistachio that was amazing and pepita flavor, slightly salted. I don't imagine I'll ever get to taste pepita gelato again.

I've never found an ice cream shop in the US as satisfying with one exception... Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams. I don't know if it's because she doesn't use a pre-pasteurized base purchased elsewhere as most of the ice cream makers in the US do?

Long day of tromping around Venice, made my way back to the railway station, and grabbed a double scoop of Stracciatella at GROM for the ride back to Padova. That day, that was the best gelato I had ever eaten in Italy.

I was surprised that some of the best gelato I ever consumed was at Cremoso in Porto, Portugal.

Cremoso in Porto, Portugal

Dang it, missed that when I was in Porto in 2019 ... guess I need to go back (and to reload on Port)

I agree that Los Italianos in Granada, Spain was wonderful & nice staff!

Both Amorino & Grom are safe choices for consistently good gelato in several countries.

Amorino Gelato Al Naturale is a favorite, and we found them all over Paris. We like the taste and the presentation with gelato on the cone as pedals of flowers.

Ice cream is my husband’s favorite. We always joke that we need to budget for gelato on every trip. On a 3 week trip one summer, we had it twice a day, at least. In Germany, Austria, Slovenia and Italy. The best EVER was in Ljubljana, Slovenia. A little cart right by the three bridges. We’ve had ice cream/eis/gelato/helado in many, many countries. Ljubljana has them all beat.

In Paris, Amorino and Grom are safe choices for sure, but there are better choices.
For Italian gelato, I really like Pozzetto, in the Marais.
For French-style sorbet and ice cream, Une Glace à Paris (Marais), Raimo (out in Daumesnil), Bac à Glaces (7th), La Tropicale (near Bastille), and the most famous one, Berthillon (Ile Saint Louis), are all worth a shot!
