I accidentally came across a site called "Seeing the Past" that was started by two British retired teachers who love history, and found it amazing. There are no ads and no "blogging." Just a ton of information and commentary about the history of numerous destinations they have traveled to, along with lots of inspiring photos. I'm putting this in General Europe since they not only cover England but also Wales and some Egypt and Normandy sites.

It's very well organized, too. You can search by locations, time periods or just go to index and scroll through. Time periods start with ancient Egypt and go all the way through WWII.
