Faroe Islands - Where to stay?

Hello RS Family,

I'm planning a trip to Faroe Islands with my husband and 2 kids. We plan on spending 7 full uninterrupted days on the island.
Should I stay in one place and do day trips? or Should I keep moving to different location. If so, where do you recommend us staying?
Please advice. Thank you.

What do you plan to do? How are you going to get around? Rental Car? Bus? Guide? How old are your kids? What time of year?

The Faroes are not that big and don't offer a lot of accommodations outside Torshavn. The ones that are offered are fairly basic.

My suggestion is to do your research, plan your trip and then decide if one or two bases is necessary. Personally, I would think you could be fine just basing in Torshavn.

Agree with Frank.

I suggest you get a guidebook and look at where you want to go. There is no one "island" to stay on, unless you mean Tórshavn, on Streymoy Island. But it is really easy to drive to the other islands. And kind of fun driving through the tunnels, some with bright colorful lighted round-abouts.

We went with four adults, so my suggestions probably wouldn't work with your family having two kids. What are their ages?

@naalehuretiree and @Frank II - I have been doing a lot of you tube and could only find limited information. I have ordered a guide book from my local library and waiting for it.

Planning this trip in July and we will be renting a car for the entire trip. My kids will be 6.5 years and 5 years old when we do this trip. My kids travel very well and they love to hike as well too. They have been travelling since they were 5 months old and do well and adapt quickly.

Torshavn basically has two hotels in the center of Torshavn and three on the outskirts. The two newest hotels are on the outskirts. These three hotels have the best parking.

Honestly, I would just set up camp at one of the Torshavn area hotels and take day trips. The Faroes are not that big and most of the islands are connected by tunnels. Driving from Torshavn to the furthest point not needing a ferry is one hour. And if you do need a ferry, most leave from Torshavn.

Make sure you understand the driving rules in the Faroes:

You'll find that getting to the Faroes is not as easy as you think. Flights from most locations are not every day except for Copenhagen. Additionally, July is prime tourist season. The hotels will fill up. Make reservations early.

I stayed at the Hotel Hafnia in 2016. Since then it has been renovated. However, parking is limited to street parking with a limit of 8 hours. The Hilton Garden Inn on the other hand offers free parking on site.

Also be aware that buses in Torshaven are free.

You say you have been watching youtube videos but the Faroes have some excellent tourism websites:
