Fanny Packs AKA Waist Belts, Sling Bags

I am thinking of getting a Fanny Pack for my next trip which is just 3 months away.

Prime Days is right around the corner and Amazon has so many that I can not make a decision. Can you recommend a brand? Of course, I am looking for one that is theft proof, comfortable and can hold my necessities.

Have you been happy or unhappy with your Fanny Pack?

FYI, many of them now are called "waist belts", "hip packs" or "sling bags" rather than fanny packs, so when you search, you might include other terms.

I don't wear one but if I did, I'd pick one from Cotopaxi, as I love their bags. https://www.cotopaxi.com/collections/hip-packs And if you sign up for emails, you get 10% off (just unsubscribe after you get the discount code).

I like this one I picked up from Costco. Might not be as big as you would like, but I like it small and the buckle by the bag part. I like the fact that one of the zippers would be pressed against your body when wearing and it can be worn across the body. Could always add a locking clip to the zippers in front to make it more theft proof since it was not designed for that.

Lululemon has some nice ones too, everywhere belt bag.

Hi Claudia,

Essentials include keys or key card, money, bus pass, passport, tissues, etc maybe big enough for smart phone.

I just remembered I will be bringing an iPad mini with me. but I believe that I have a day bag that can fit into my back pack or suitcase.

I want it to be comfortable, I want it to be difficult to steal off of my waist but able to get it off without requiring help.

want it to be easy to open but still secure.

I want it to be big enough but not too big.

Did I answer your question? Not certain by what you mean when you say essentials.

By the way, thanks for your help many times over. My trip is now less than three months away.

Gail,

I like the links that you sent me.

I do not shop at Costco but maybe Amazon has the same or similar brands.

I think that I already came across Lululemon on Amazon.

Prime day begins Tuesday and I have Prime. Maybe I can get one for a couple of dollars off.

Just had this one pop-up on my Facebook page: Pacsafe® Eco Anti-Theft Waist Pack At $120, it might not be what you're looking for but it was a coincidence. Since I clicked on a Pac-safe link in a thread earlier today, I've been bombarded with Pac-safe ads.

bostonphil7, it's come up a thousand times, but in case you're unaware, the word "fanny" means something vulgar in Brit-speak, so the term is best avoided abroad.

I love the bags that I have been looking at. Very versatile. Much better than I was hoping for and very reasonably priced plus some are actually pretty.

Thank you all.

Hi Stan

Thanks for the heads up about use of Fanny abroad. I do not like the word anyway. I do not see any reason why I would have to use it once I get my bag.

$120 does not fit into my budget but thank you for the suggestion.

I have added two bags into my Amazon cart for Prime Day. Each one was $35 and who knows, I might be able to save a couple of dollars come Prime Day.

Bostonphil, care to share the links to what you picked out? I'm also waiting for prime day to purchase a few things.

If you use a waist pack you'd want to have it ride in the front not the back. I'd be very cautious about keeping your passport in the fanny pack. IF you are moving thru a crowd I'd still want to keep my hand over the zipper.

TBH, I'd rather carry my passport in a money belt hidden under my clothing if I were a new traveler.

If I wanted security, I'd go for either travelon or something like Pacsafe. Pacsafe has quite a few, I'd stick with a smaller one for what you list. I like these bags because the waist belt buckle is on the side near the bag and I believe they lock as well.

I have a Cotopaxi waist pack for my compact dslr, but there is nothing secure about it. I did not keep anything but my camera in it. It's very thin and has lack of any construction and the buckle appears fragile and the waist belt can easily be cut.

I used this sling bag that has a zippered pocket against your body. That’s about as theft proof as you can get. I wore the bag in the front anytime I was in crowds. Worked great in the airport for keeping passports easily accessible. The water bottle pockets will hold a plastic bottle, and the zippered front pockets are essential. There are also dividers in each of the zippered front pockets. It will get heavy if loaded up.

Looks like a good bag.

Will I be able to carry my mini iPad in it?

Hi Jules,

Well, I picked out too many. They are in my cart and I am going to have to make a choice on Prime Day.

I went with most of the recommendations that I received on this discussion. the brand names.

Read the individual posts. Those are the ones that I have put in my cart or most of the ones. Some of the links take you to Amazon and a bag. . I love them all.

Well I don't know what happened but when I went to bed last night, I had about 5 or 6 bags in my Amazon cart. When I woke up this morning,. I had one. However, I was able to find two others, one in browsing and one saved for later.

I dreaded having to make decision today but it was made for me.

I moved Lulu .... into the cart and I also still have the Go4Free in the cart. Both bags are great and I will make a decision on Prime Day which is just two days away.
