Does anyone know the name of a famous Switzerland Train that covers a beautiful train ride through tunnels and up a beautifu mountainside? Do you also know how to do the Matterhorn?
As for the beautiful train rides there are lots of trains in Switzerland. Some of the trains are special scenic trains, but all of the trains (even non-scenic) travel on the same rails to the same destinations.
The Glacier Express definitely travels along a scenic path, but it is also the slowest passenger train in the world. Personally I would rather be out and about in the beautiful scenery rather than sitting on a never-ending train ride.
Well for the Matterhorn you travel to Brig and then up the hillside to a small town below Zermatt. Then you have to take a cog railroad to Zermatt. And from there, I guess, you walk or take a ski lift.
There are a lot of scenic train rides in Switzerland. The most popular is called the "Glacier Express". www.glacierexpress.ch
You can take the regular SwissRail trains all the way to Zermatt. Once you get there you can take a cog rail train up to the Gornergratt where on a clear day you have a stunning view of the Matterhorn. Their are guides in Zermatt who will help you get to the top of the Matterhorn if that is what you mean by "doing" it.
Jodi,
... I looked at the web site www.glacierexpress, but still saw no name of the rail company. We have taken that trip twice - from Brig to Göschenen (maybe next time we will take the complete Glacier Express trip). The rail company is called FURKA OBERALP. It's privately owned and our Eurail Pass was not valid on it. Nevertheless, it's worth the price - and then some. I would suggest taking a second class car:- the 2nd class price is a bit less and is just as pleasant as first class.
....Have a terrific trip! ... P.
Here is a website with info on some of the other scenic railway lines in Switzerland including the Glacier Express.

We are using the Bernina to take us down to Lake Como next month (with a regular train connecting).
