Any great itineraries for a road trip from Frankfurt to Rome? We are a family of 4 renting a car and driving (fee not an issue). We’ve been to Europe several times, but this will be a first for our two kids (age 8 and 10). Total trip length is 17 days. Bonus for those who can also provide timing suggestions! Thank you!
Just in case you are not aware, there is a hefty fee for renting a car in one country and dropping it in another (could be hundreds or more). You might want to look into that first, because it may be a significant addition to your budget.
Are flights booked? Was there a reason you proposed this route? Knowing those details can help us provide alternatives or help answer your request.
Yes, I have already rented the vehicle and paid the fee. It made sense for us to do a different drop off. The fee was not an issue. Prefer to travel through Germany, maybe France, Switzerland and Italy. Any itinerary suggestions would be awesome. Thanks!
Okay great! Many are not aware of that, so I hopefully saved you from 20 replies saying the same thing. In fact, you might want to add that to your post because people who do not read replies may mention it also, ad nauseum.
I have not done this route myself, but you might want to also share how much time you will spend in Frankfurt and Rome so people will know exactly what time is available for the driving portion.
I do know Italy, and one idea if you will do a lot of hiking in Switzerland is to shift focus and do cities in Italy, like Turin and Genoa, for a change of pace, but having the car complicates that a bit--not anything insurmountable of course. Did you have anything in mind in terms of the urban-rural split?
FromGermany to Switzerland - From Frankfurt, go south thru Darmstadt, turn at Bensheim, go via Michelstadt and Miltenburg to Wertheim. This is the start point for the alternate route of the Romantic Road. Go via Rothenburg ( Tauber ) to Fussen. From there go to Lindau and Lake Constance to Luzern. Or get there via Innsbruck and Liechtenstein.
Since you are an old pro, I won't have to mention the need to purchase and attach vignettes in Switzerland and Austria, and the requirement to have an International Drivers Permit for Austria and Italy.
An 8 and 10 yr old will probably not want to do the things mom and dad would be interested in so tough to provide ideas (when we did our European trip with my daughters they were HS/College age) ... however, one place that does come to mind right away is Neuschwanstein Castle near Munich ... otherwise I'm drawing a blank.
