I have no preference of a specific country but don't like it too hot. I am going mid August with my husband and 7 year old boy. We like quiet natural small towns and villages without too much commercialisation. Coastal areas are preferred as we like messing about in boats and water but are not qualified sailors. We like walking and horse riding. Could anyone suggest a few possibilities for me to look at. It is essential that there will be other children around. Thanks.

I would highly recommend checking out the KeyCamp, EuroCamp and Canvas Holidays properties in Europe if you are wanting other kids around. They all offer kids programs in English.

I think Dinas suggestions are great, years ago when our kids were smaller I had looked at some of those ( Keycamps in particular) and thought they looked like great fun for kids.

Well, Lorraine, Mid-August is prime holiday season in Europe and the coastal areas will be packed with vacationers. Have you looked at the Polish (yes, Polish) coast of the Baltic? It, too, may be overcrowded, though. Try the island of Ruegen, Germany's largest. It has several charming small towns and villages and a miniature train to take you around. Also, check out Sylt. Other options are lakes in Bavaria, Northern Italy and Austria, that'll give you boating and possible horses. Try googling farm vacations or farm stays in those locations. Quite often, they cater to children and riders. Many of them are not working farms but quite a few are. Of course, there are the Northsea beaches and islands, too. If you don't find accommodations for this year, you may have to plan way ahead next year.

Thanks everyone! I had eurocamp on my shortlist and was wondering about the baltic areas but didn't really know where to start. So thanks for the specific places. I also wondered about Menorca?

Lorraine, check the average temps for the places you short-list. You don't like it too hot. Anywhere South is going to be as hot as Hades in August.

Check out www.kinderhotels.com
A great group of hotels for families. Many in Austria with summer lake swimming/boating, hiking, and fun activities for families. Beautiful mountain views. There'll be plenty of other kids around.
