Fall Trip Help

Hello, I am curious as to what some travelers think would be the best option for an enjoyable Fall trip. I can go for about 10 days and it would be sometime in late October-early November. A couple things to keep in mind first. I am a mid 20s male whom will more than likely be traveling solo for this trip. I know some of these options would be more cost efficient than others, but money will not be an issue and won’t be a deciding factor. I know these places are going to be about 3 nights only per city and generally that is not recommended, especially by people on these forums. I know I won’t get to see everything and it will only be a taste of certain cities, but I have done a lot of traveling and know that at least 2.5 days in certain cities will be enough to satisfy me. Basically just looking for anyone’s thoughts on what would be the best, most memorable trip or even the one you would pick if you haven’t been to these places.

  1. Vienna, Krakow, Budapest
  2. Brussels, Edinburgh, Dublin
  3. Iceland (could potentially make 7 days and save some days off work for other travel)
  4. Stay in North America and travel to Pacific Northwest. I am in Pennsylvania so this would still be a long trip for me: Vancouver, Seattle, Portland
  5. Greece and Istanbul

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated and even if you wanted to give rankings on best to worst would be fantastic. Thanks to all for your input.

As a sport land native, I’ll opine on the 4th choice. While there is beautiful scenery in all three cities, if you come in late October/early November you’ll be seeing it through rain. Far better to come here in summer or early fall. Then you can enjoy sightseeing and the outdoor recreation that all three areas are famous for.

They all sound fun! I was in Iceland mid to late September. I had lovely weather and a wonderful time. What is your objective for Iceland? I'm not sure your time frame is the best time to visit Iceland. I don't think time of year matters so much for option 1, and those are marvelous cities to visit. My son lived in Seattle for a few years. We visited him once mid October. We had all kinds of weather! I can't speak to Option 2.

Jules: I have thought about if I choose Iceland moving it to December. Despite the only 4 hours of daylight, I’ve heard the winter scenery is absolutely beautiful and it is a wonderful place to get you ready for the Christmas season.

(#4)-- At that time of year it will most likely be cloudy and rain is to be expected. Depending on what you plan to do, the weather should be considered.

One year I sat outside in a short sleeve shirt on Halloween evening--- other years even the ducks had life jackets!

Just letting you know its variable here that time of year

Option 1 - good

Option 2 - Brussels is the dullest city in Europe, so I wouldn’t go for this option.

Option 3 - the most unique place in Europe, so gets my vote.

Option 4 - I have visited Vancouver and Seattle. Plenty to see.

Option 5 - I wouldn’t want to risk the weather in Greece at this time of year, as it could be very wet.

3 or 4 would get my vote.

My vote goes to # 1 absolutely. All three are lovely cities, historical, poignant, moving, and this is even prior to the horrors of WW2 as it relates to Vienna and Budapest.

I know Vienna the best of the three, have been to all three, and would do repeat visits to all three. Krakow survived the war unscathed, intact. Budapest was horrifically fought over with the last German offensive in the war taking place in the battle for Budapest.

Krakow has one of the very best hostels in Europe...super nice and cheap, the Greg and Tom Hostel, close to the main train station. All these 3 cities are connected by night trains. That option gives you an extra day, say Vienna to Krakow, and Krakow to Budapest. You're one third my age and I still take night trains, no problems at all sleeping on them. At your age I would most definitely use that option for this itinerary to maximize the short duration of this trip.

Should you decide on only going to 2 cities, then I would suggest Vienna and then one of the other two. Which ever one you choose, logistically, there is an advantage.
