Eye-Fi

Has anyone used this?

Eye-Fi

It sounds like a great idea. Upload photos almost daily and no need for a computer.

Before I get it, I'd like to hear if anyone has tried it.

It does look intriguing. I'm curious how well it works, too.

Looks like you need to configure the wireless networks for the card on a computer before it can see them. Otherwise, you wouldn't be able to discover them, or enter credentials for them as the card has no interface itself.

So, in theory, it could work if you knew what all the wireless network information was for all the places you would be going... However, I don't know how you would get that information.

It looks like, according to this article that there are some built in automatic networks, but it appears there is a service fee. I don't see a list of networks on their site anywhere though...

As Jon says, the concept is flawed and not very convenient. Most free and pay WiFi connections require that you read, and "sign" a disclaimer via a browser that you will not sue the ISP for "whatever". The card doesn't give you the ability to do that, so unless it can latch onto an unsecured router in someones apartment, it won't be able to connect most of the time.

If you get the Eye-Fi Explore X2 or Eye-Fi Pro X2, they have 1 year of Hotspot Access included ($29.99/year after that). These cards incorporate Devicescape's software that allow them to click through many splash screens. Additionally, you can add credentials for a Hotspot Account you may already have - e.g. BT Openzone, Boingo, FON, etc. You can view a list of supported hotspots at http://www.easywifi.com For more information on Eye-Fi's Hotspot Access, please visit: http://www.eye.fi/how-it-works/features/hotspot-access Randhir (from Eye-Fi)
