'Extreme heat warnings issued in Europe as temperatures pass 40C (104ºF)'

"Authorities in 11 countries warn residents and tourists to take
precautions amid region’s most intense heatwave – nicknamed Lucifer –
since 2003.

....

As temperatures in many places hit or exceeded 40C (104F) in the
region’s most sustained heatwave since 2003, emergency services are
being put on standby and people have been asked to “remain vigilant”,
stay indoors, avoid long journeys, drink enough fluids and listen for
emergency advice from health officials."

Even in places like Split, Croatia, it will be in the upper 90s for the next 6 days.
If I were to go to Europe, I'd focus on the Scandinavian countries, Scotland, and Ireland for starters.

Please be careful to those of you who are traveling to Europe in the heat of the summer.

Makes me wonder how all the tours are handling their groups when the itinerary calls for outdoor activities? I was in Scotland last month and the weather was blessedly cool.

If you want to avoid heat you would be safe in Iceland, Scotland, Ireland, Scandinavia, sometimes England.

frank II

what swamp/desert are you from? needed a jacket at near 70?

65-70 is perfect shorts t-shirt weather here

I suppose its what one is accustomed to.

The far side of 90 is too hot, even if it is a 'dry heat'-- you listening AZ?

Currently just outside Nice but we're in a villa with a pool thankfully. Walking along the Promenade des Anglais was roasting even with the sea breeze so coming back to the pool was a godsend. For us this is our annual relaxing sumer holiday where we're content to lounge around the pool, I would be very unhappy if we were traipsing around sight after sight.

Whilst much of southern Europe & the Med are baking hot with drought, the British Isles have been much cooler and experiencing worse summer weather than normal since 3rd week of July. This is due to the Jet Stream’s position.

We're also getting much the same temperatures here at the moment, so this is not limited to Europe. According to my high-tech thermometer, the temperature yesterday was 39C / 102F. We're also getting heavy smoke from forest fires some days, just to add to the discomfort level. I understand that Portugal, Spain and other countries are also dealing with fires. Seems to be a bad year in many parts of the world.

I wonder what Al Gore's new movie has to say about all this?

My sister - who lives in the UK - went to Devon this weekend. She took a photo at the beach and I'm like - where are all the people?! Her reply - it's cold...

In Paris, it has felt like Autumn for the last few weeks. Piles of leaves knee-high in my neighborhood...

On the other hand, anybody remember the Twilight Zone episode when the sun was coming too close to the Earth?

I just came back from Vienna, and yes, it was very bad. Every day was 90-95 at least, and no air conditioning to speak of anywhere. I just walked a little slower and kept drinking water. Not much to be done about it, wasn't going to let it ruin my trip. The cool shower I took each evening upon returning to my room kept me sane.

I arrived in Vienna on 22 May and it was already too warm for a light jacket. Not always so in the past. In the next two weeks in Vienna, it was always warm to hot. The hotel posted the temperature every day so one could not miss seeing which day was 30C or above or which was 25C and above. One can expect Vienna every day to be hot or still hotter in June and July.

Joe, 65 to 70 are perfect nighttime temperatures. Thanks for reminding me why I tolerate AZ summers. "Perfect" weather starts in September, about the time we get home from Europe and the humid monsoon season ends.

My friend in Le Havre is complaining about the lack of summer for the past several weeks. It was very hot in early July but has been unseasonably cold since then.

Like most of England. The Shetland Islands north of Scotland had more July sun than Cornwall!
