Extra shoes in carryon bag

Do they need to be taken out and put into the bin along with the ones we are wearing.

I do have one problem. My good walking shoes are Nike and they do have gel inners that can be removed for cleaning. I was planning to put them in my carry on and wear my slip on sandals through the check point. This is because I am partially handicapped and do not bend very well to take shoes on and off unless I have a chair to sit on while doing so.

This is what is in the TSA site:

Gel shoe inserts - Gel shoe inserts are not permitted, but shoes constructed with gel heels are allowed and must be removed and screened.

If I opt to wear these shoes are they going to take the gel inners out? I hope not. If I opt to pack them, will I be required to check the bag then?

Sorry for the weird question. I am determined to have one carryon and don't want to goof up.

according to the web site - your inserts would need to be checked. The nike-air style with build in bubbles or gel in the heal seem to be ok with them. If shoes are packed in the carry on - they can tell and if they want they can have you open them. But usually its just the ones you wear. Looks like your inserts may need to be checked. You can try your luck tho. Maybe a DRs note will help. Or else mail them to first hotel, or buy them over there at pharmacy.

Hi Sue

I don't know what countries you are visiting, but if you are departing from the UK at any time this is the situation. You will need to take your Nikes out of your hand luggage and put them through the security scanners, along with your hand luggage. Then you put them back in your hand luggage and proceed to the departure lounge.

I can't work out exactly what the UK rules are on shoes. I always travel in the same black leather lace ups, sometimes I have to take them off and put them through security, sometimes I don't. Same airport, same route, same shoes. The only thing I know for certain is you can't argue with the security staff, unless you enjoy missing flights.

I am also curious about those who are di-hard one carryon folks who do not check anything. What do you all do for shoes? Don't you carry ones for heavy walking or hiking or climbing, whatever the case may be? They must have to be good, comfortable shoes with some sort of good support for your feet.

If you were going on one of the Rick Steves' tours right now and only brought one carryon, what sort of shoes would you bring knowing that you were going to be doing a lot of walking?

I've never done an RS tour but I hate checking bags and always carry on.

I always wear my tennis shoes or the "biggest" shoes I'm bringing and pack another pair of shoes in my bag, which are always smaller in size.

What sort of insoles do your tennis shoes have and are they comfortable enough to do all of the heavy walking that you might be doing?

I probably don't have the best for what you need. I do know that Merrill's are great shoes and they have a new "walking/tennis" type shoe that they just came out with. I have a friend at work with feet "issues" and she will only wear Merrill's. I'm thinking about getting a pair for my next European trip in June.

I'm not usually one to comment on footwear, but I swear by Etonics. They're lighweight, comfortable, but strong enough to stand up to all the walking I do while overseas. I wear black walking Etonics, which apparently are off the market now, but due back on soon....I sure hope so! I'm not sure where you'll find them in the U-S. You can also insert different ortho inserts into them to customize the fit and comfort.
