Extended European touring (by car).

1) We're planning to tour Western & Eastern Europe by car for a year in 2010. Are there restrictions on length of stay? Some sources say 90 days. Is it possible to stay 90 days, then leave (for how long?) and return?
2) Is it possible to license the car, which I'm thinking would be less prone to theft/abuse?

You can only stay a total of 90 days in the Schengen Zone (most of eastern and western Europe) during the 180 period that begins when you first enter the Zone. Basically, that means if you stay 90 days you would have to leave the Zone for 90 days before you could return. You can't just leave for a few days to "reset" the calendar. If you are spending a year, you have a whole host of additional hurdles. You should consider applying for a visa, buying a used car and selling after a year would be much more reasonable than renting a vehicle or look for a year lease. You need to look at health insurance.

Nancy (first post) refers to an extensive prior discussion of this subject, here's that discussion

Nancy and Frank are spot on, this has come up frequently here: it's not like the old days, when you could just go and hang out for a year if you had a passport and enough money.
