Expired US passport

In 2008, I renewed my passport. The new one arrived, with the old one with holes punched out of it.
I just renewed, the old one wasn't included. Is this standard policy now? I had a lot of stamps/memories with the old one. Thanks.

Glad to hear that it will be returned as mine has a Chinese visa in it good for eight more years.

Mine arrived in two separate mailings also. The expired one showed up a few weeks after.

Suki, you should check this but if your passport has been renewed and the old one “Holed” I dont think that passport will work to get you in under that visa. I am pretty sure you will have to send it and your new passport to a consulate or embassy to get a new visa put in your new passport.

There is generally no issue with using a visa in a holed passport. Just because a passport has expired does not invalidate the visa. In situations where you are using the visa in the holed passport, you just need to carry both passports. I have done this many times using a 10 yr visa for India - in fact did this just last month. No need to go through the hassles of trying to get the visa transferred from the old passport to the new one.

China may see it differently and with my long experience with Chinese visas and coming and going there she would be prudent to check it out.

Each time I renewed my passport recently, 1995, 2005, and the last time, 2015, the new passport and the old perforated one are mailed separately.
