Experiences with Travel Insurance companies who actually pay their claims

Looking in to travel insurance to make medical our primary and trip coverage. In the past we have used Travel Insured through our USAA insurance company. Never have made a claim, but we are wondering if anyone has suggestions on travel insurance where you actually had to use it and without difficulty or a fight in getting claims paid. Has anyone ever used Travel Insured and had good luck with claims?

If they are associated with USAA I would trust them. I have done business with USAA for over 50 years and they have always taken good care of me.

We use Travel Guard, part of AIG. We had two major(100% of trips that were cancelled due to surgeries) and two claims for medical care while abroad, all claims were paid 100% in the time they said it would take to process the claims. We always have sent in complete documentation of medical diagnosis, charges etc. which is important. We book their GOLD level which covers medical evacuation home if needed.

We have USAA but haven't used it for Travel Insurance.

I do purchase medical and medical evacuation insurance when we travel overseas from American Express. It is inexpensive. Never had to file a claim on that insurance.

When we go on a cruise, I usually purchase the trip insurance with the cruise. I had to cancel back in 2010 and the insurance paid up.

Also, when flying overseas, I usually buy the travel insurance offered by the airline (usually Delta).

I have read a lot of posts on cruise critic boards where people use insuremytrip.com and seem happy with it.

Last year was the first time we purchased travel insurance, after six years of annual trips to Europe. And lo and behold, we had to use it! It was with Travel Guard. I got bronchitis while we were in Majorca. Had doctor treat me at our hotel room. I was too sick to fly the next day, so we had to change our flight and train tickets.

Travel Guard was very helpful with helping us make the changes. Received several emails from them over the next few days, inquiring about how I was feeling. Filed the claim upon returning home. They did request a whole bunch of documentation about our entire trip, including a full itinerary that listed all hotel reservations, transportation, etc. After I finally provided everything they were asking for, they were quick to pay the claim.

Well worth it and certainly glad we had purchased the insurance. Won't go without it again.

I had pretty good luck working with Amex on a rental car claim last year. They paid even though I had failed to take photos of the damage (I sent a picture of the car and indicated all the damage I noticed from the accident).

Insurance is a contractual thing. Paying or not paying (what they say they will pay) isn't really an option as long as you fulfill the terms of the agreement on your side. The most important thing is to know your responsibilities and adhere to them. Typical requirements are notifying them as soon as possible, documenting the damage, filing an accident report, etc. With cancelation, know the valid reasons for canceling according to the contract and how to document those. If you're relying on any insurance, read the plan and make at least a mental note of what you need to do in the event of a claim.
