Some people and websites say it is 2lbs. Rick's travel store says "under 3 lbs." This leaves me confused as the difference in one pound is significant for me. I also do not understand why Rick's travel store would not carry the exact weight, especially since he has helped so many of us understand the importance of traveling light. Thanking you in advance..
John
I have a circa 2000 Convertible Carryon bag. It's the same size as the current bag, but isn't expandable, and it doesn't have cinch straps, so the current bag should be a little heavier than my bag. Mine weighs, per the US Postal Service, 2.27#. In comparison, the Goodhope bag, again using the same Postal Service scale, weighs 2.08 lb and the Essential Carryon weighs 1.82 lb. Unfortunately, the Essential Carryon isn't currently available, and the Goodhope bag, at 1400 cu in, is a little small. The Appenzell bag is just a little larger than the Goodhope bag and weighs only 1.39 lb, b, but it doesn't have a single compartment, doesn't open well for loading, and doesn't have hideaway straps.
While I too am a fuss about weight, "under 3 pounds" is pretty light for a back pack. The difference between the Steves bag and a technical back pack is the Steves Classic Carry-on has a pretty basic suspension system being pretty much just the shoulder straps. That said, the Classic is pretty functional darting between airport terminals and to and from hotels etc. I found that the on-line retail sources that I have used usually are pretty good at responding to technical request for information. When I inquired about a Black Diamond collapsible ski pole's minimum length length, the representative went back to the warehouse area and measured one for me. I have had similar experiences with REI, LL Bean and Patagonia to name a few. If you want the bags weight to the nearest oz, try calling.
They may not have a scale handy at the Rick Steves store. Lee says his is 2.27 pounds and the new ones weigh a bit more. Can't you just call it 2.5 and weigh it yourself as you pack? Are a few ounces going to make a difference in whether you buy it or not?
The Essential Carry-On will be in stock at Campmor in September. That was confirmed late last week.
Hello all, thank you for taking the time to reply. I currently use the Appenzell Day Pack that weights in at 1 lb 4 oz. However, it has a big flaw in that it does not open like a normal bag. It is not a deal breaker but I was wondering in comparison how much would the Classic Back Door bag weight. And yes to me the difference in weight has importance. I look at it as a game to travel as light as possible, yet still carry all the things that work for me.
I realized that I bought my wife a Rick Steves Convertible carryon about two years after I bought mine. As I remember, at the time, there was only one model made. This one is expandable and has cinch straps and a waist belt. I just weighed it, and without the 3.2 oz single shoulder strap, it weighs 2 lb 13½ oz. (2.84 lb), about 9 oz more than my older bag. As I handled it, I got the feeling that the basic material was a little heavier weight than that of my original bag - important if you overpack and have to check it, but unimportant if you carry it on. By the way, Campmor told me that they expect to have more of the Essential Carryons, "eventually".
John, if you are not traveling soon, keep you eye out for the Campmor Essential carryon mentioned in a few posts. I have the RS convertible (a really excellent sale price at the AAA store last summer) but recently traveled with what I think was the predecessor to the Campmor Essential, called the Outdoor Product Essential. It was just perfect. The bag weighs 25 oz and I had an OpTech strap for 6.4 oz, so just under 2# for the whole thing. That bag does not have much structure to it, so if that bothers you it may not work for you. I dont have the RS classic or I would weigh it for you.
