Evacuation and Medical Insurance

We are 75 years old, traveling independently for 7 weeks in Spain, France, and Italy. We wish to purchase Evacuation and Medical Insurance only. Is $50,000 Medical and $100,000 Evacuation insurance for each sufficient, or would you suggest higher limits ? Any recommendations on best companies to use. Our Medicare and supplemental insurance will not pay for overseas coverage.

pg,

I doubt that those amounts will be sufficient, especially for Evacuation Insurance. The cost of a private jet, operating expenses, crew and specialized medical personnel is going to cost more than $100K. One option for evacuation is MedJet Assist. Although their cutoff is age 75, you may be able to get that until you turn 76.

It's difficult to offer very specific advice as your Profile doesn't indicate where you're located. The type of insurance options will vary according to location.

AIG Travel Guard's Silver Plan includes $150K medical evacuation coverage. I have yet to need to use it and hope I don't.

What does a typical evacuation cost?

Travelex Travel Insurance recently released information about the
average costs of a medical evacuation. According to their statistics,
the average medical evacuation within North America costs $25,000.
From Europe, the cost can reach $50,000. The average cost of a nurse
escort is $11,000 within North America and $24,000 from Europe.

How much coverage is enough?

Squaremouth typically recommends travelers purchase between $50,000
and $100,000 of medical evacuation coverage. For travel to more remote
locations, travelers should consider up to $250,000 of coverage.

I have Medicare Supplemental Plan F that includes $50K of foreign medical coverage. An older friend with a history of heart issues has a similar Supplemental and prior to a trip to Germany purchased trip insurance for the first time. He had a heart issue requiring 6 stents while in Germany. He told me that the German bill for $6K and between Medicare Supplemental and Trip Insurance his out of pocket cost was $0.

As a comparison to my retired friend with the 6 stents, a working friend had one stent placed by an American hospital/doctor during the same time frame. Even with work place medical insurance (that he helped select) his out of pocket cost for the single stent was something like $5K. $6K for six stents in Germany vs $5K after insurance at in the US. Apparently it's cheaper to have a medical issue in Europe.

Check out insuremytrip.com and compare policies. On the left of the home page you can choose the type of coverage you want. For you, check out medical and evacuation. You will get cancelation, baggage, etc. also, but that is ok as long as you get the medical and evacuation as high as you need.

Make sure to call them and learn about the fine print before you buy. I prefer to get the pre-exisiting condition waiver so I don't have to worry about that. I hear that even a change in dose of a medication can be tagged as a medical change which then could deny coverage if you don't have the waiver. To get the waiver you must buy a policy that allows it, AND purchase the policy within so many days of your FIRST purchase toward your trip (flights, hotel deposit, etc)
